Hi guys! I have been trying to get good at Crucible (for a long time) and I really really want tips on how to get better. I really want to master HCs and other weapons so I can adapt my playstyle but I have horrific tendencies to randomly miss shots.
Also I would like to understand more general theory over PvP which are similar to the 60/40 rule (40% screen behind cover, 60% centered/aimed at the enemy or its the other way around I believe)
Thank you so much for any inputs even the negatives

Use what works for you not what people suggest

ALWAYS aim for the head, crits are your friend in PvP. NEVER bag an enemy unless you outplayed them. TRY to cap zones in Control. DON'T be afraid to use your super in panic moments.

Positioning is huge. Good positioning can give you the space to practice. Use cover, try to aim head level and play with a teammate. Another good way to get better is to record clips and watch them back, with that you can see what you've done well on or what you didn't do do too well. It can make you more critical of your gameplay (and less critical of your teammates) and over time can help you generally improve overall.

Some great advices guys thanks. I haven’t seen it mentioned yet so I’ll just add: Adapt to your opponents, depending on the map their load out, skill level, coordination… it can pay to revise your strategy.

But a chronus like everyone else has

Movement is the key.

Edited by FrenetiCreature: 12/14/2024 7:01:29 AMMy best advice would be this - 1. If you're a hunter, put on knucklehead radar. (Use MIDA if not) You can be ads at head level before an engagement, whereas most other people will have to take that split second to get ads. And you'll always be able to see if someone is trying to flank you. 2. Let the engagements come to you. That way you can be set up at a comfortable spot with shelter to dip in and out of. Make your opponents fight you on your terms. 3. There's no shame in running away or hiding. If your opponent starts to get the best of you, disengage and let your health get back up before engaging again. 4. Have a weapon for medium to long engagements, and one for short to medium engagements. My favorite combo is either scout/pulse with sidearm/SMG. 5. Try to only go for 1v1 engagements. Don't try to be a hero. If there's more than 1 opponent at a time, most times they'll destroy you. 6. Don't chase people around corners. They're probably baiting you. Whenever someone is chasing me, I'll dip around a corner and drop a smoke bomb, go about 10 feet and then turn around with my sidearm pointed right in their direction. There's usually nothing they can do once they come around the corner and get blinded. These obviously aren't "top tier" tactics. I would call them... "safe" tactics, for beginners. Where you can gain a solid, comfortable foundation from which you can venture out from, once you start learning more. Edit: Oh man, I almost forgot the most important thing. If you defeat someone in their super with your primary, you HAVE to t-bag. I'm pretty sure it's like, 7 years bad luck, if you don't.

I’m not a great PvP player, so I don’t have much, but don’t forget the build, especially modifiers to reduce flinch and improve aim assist. Cool idea for a thread, thanks

Edited by Zodleon: 12/14/2024 12:41:23 PM-Sound cues So information is a massive deal. In pvp, drop other audio sources to about a 4 and max out sound effects, jumps, footsteps, shots and ability activation sounds in addition to team location and radar can pretty much tell you everything you need to know. This has probably made the biggest difference for me in the long run. -Cover While you can never always be around it try to stay within a sliding distance of it if possible, and the 60/40 rule helps with not overextending. But there is generally the 3 second rule some ppl like where you don't stay still for too long. Hunkering down tends to make picking at you easier since you're in a predictable spot. -Disengaging In high skill lobbies a lot of disengaging happens, if you're in a bad engagement and can retreat it's often better to do so than die in a lost fight, assuming you won't lose the game for doing it. -flanking A full flank is really only useful if you can do it fast, if it takes too long it gives the opponent too much time to notice and collapse on you or your now disadvantaged teammates. A annoyance/Pic flank is usually just meant to deal damage, divide attention, and distract, or get a quick safe pic if you can't get away from your flank alive, you over extended. -Controller settings If you're on controller and don't already use custom bindings, I strongly recommend using the puppeteer setup which puts crouch on the right joystick. -Mod your armor Make sure your armor has relevant mods for loaders, holsters, targeting, and unflinching. -Stats Recovery is probably the most important stat in pvp, with the exception of certain builds, you really, really want it at 9 or 10, it makes a huge servability and actions per minute different. Resilience has a general threshold of 7 for most guns to force stricter optimals. Hopefully one of those can help you.

Agree with a lot of what’s already said: to add: 1. HC- I was never comfortable using them for a long time. For me: I learned HC by starting with Crimson. It’s a burst kind of shot, so it felt a little more comfortable/ and forgiving than others. Now that I have it: Malfeasance feels really smooth to use. Bottom line- and this applies to all weapons- find what you are comfortable with. 2. General Play: I started to learn PvP by playing Control. I could see how other guardians could play the map or encounters. It also helped my confidence, because even when I wasn’t getting the most kills, I could still help my team by capturing zones. There wasn’t the pressure on me, as much as in the 3v3 modes. 3. Learn the maps. This will help with others suggestions- where to hid, when or to push, and how you play in general. 4. Don’t be stuck on one load-out or play style. Obviously, find loads of-outs and play style you are comfortable with. However, based off the map, or how the match is going, or what weapons the other team uses, be willing to change. You keep getting snipped- don’t just keep running the same lane, as an example. 5. Don’t worry about what is Meta. Find weapons you are comfortable with. Hope this helps, and good luck guardian!

A big thing that helped me out is understanding the information game. Try and learn what will take you off the radar. Crouching, and therefore sliding, for example. They don't take you off the radar completely, but they make you ping it less, which can make it easier to get around without being noticed on certain smaller maps. Use the tools that you have to get as much information as you can, so that you can go into engagements with that knowledge, and do everything that you can to deny critical knowledge to your opponents.

You started at a really bad time ! PvP is a mess right now . My advice do not take it seriously and in small doses . So much is bugged and lots strange things happening in PvP ….tale with a pinch of salt ✌️

Always keep recticle at head level… For a hand cannon you do need to use cover… when u peek shoot they are the strongest weapons by far most of them also have crazy aim assist so just set recticle to head level strafe out and shoot, aim assist will take care of the rest… The biggest skills u need in the crucible are positioning and pathing … use your weapon at its optimal…. With a hand cannon you need to find ways around the map to always be in that optimal ttk range… things like scouts work the other way…. You want to be repositioning to keep people away from you (be aware of the spawns changing) The radar gives lots of information…. Use it at all times… personally I think it’s one of the most broken aspects of PvP, they should absolutely replace it with a counter strike style radar …

I’m also trying to improve so you can add me if you want. If you are trying to learn to use hcs you need to play smart with your cover. If you want to slide out and challenge you should try to tap them once first. It’s also a good habit to favour a left hand peek as it hides your model on your enemies screen while letting you hit them. If you are on controller and struggle with peek shooting, try higher mobility.

To me it just comes down to muscle memory and instinctiveness. Don’t try to overthink it too much while playing. I also find myself always glancing at the radar for split seconds and using that at a gauge on how aggressive I should be. If you play enough then you’ll get a feel on how people play depending on what they use and you can use that as a way to try and predict what will happen in certain scenarios. Popular weapons like fusion rifles, shotguns and snipers each have unique play styles. As for hand cannons, you’ll get used to them just by playing and learning from experience. Also for 140 rpms, the range you want is at least mid 60s. I also like higher stability (especially on controller). I hope this helped.
