Since everyone is complaining (rightfully so) I figured I'd throw my thoughts out there. Let me start out by saying, I've always been a hard-core gamer and destiny player since day one. It's a big part of who I am and to watch it die off like this is just so painful. It's like watching the series finale of a show that's been on for a decade. I've completed every raid, dungeon, and just about every grandmaster available, I've been flawless, unbroken, I earned but not forgotten the old-fashioned way. I have many thousands of hours dedicated to playing this game. With all that said, I don't want to play the game anymore.
It's really hard for all of us to try to figure out exactly why we are having a hard time outside of stagnant boring content. There are deeper issues with the game that are keeping people from wanting to keep playing are starting. I think I can paint a broad stroke on the canvas that really takes what everyone is saying and put it into a few words. The game is far too complicated for the average player to handle. That is the biggest issue. 80% of the player base can not enjoy this game because they simply can not grasp the concepts put forth.
I'll start with raids. The highest pinnacle content is available, and it is not even an option to the majority of your player base because the mechanics are outrageously complicated. D1 had the idea down, simple but challenging. I raided every raid every week. It was fun to get together, chat, meet new people, and teaching was easy. I guided hundreds of guardians through all the raids. In D2 it's just not the case. Over complicated raid mechanics makes it difficult to teach which makes the community more toxic because we have to spend 6 hours just trying to explain the encounters and even when we do get it the mechanics are so unforgivable that unless you're basically perfect, you fail. Introduction of time limits to encounters outside of Master content should not have been a thing. Why not have a version of the raid that is basically no fail? You just go until you get the mechanics down and then move on to master content? Point is you can't keep catering to the 10% of hard-core players and expect everyone to keep playing.
Regular content. The problems i have here are most of the same complaints everyone has. I'm just annoyed with how anti player a lot of the content is. Don't you hate it when you aim down sights and the computer move with your reticle? Some of you know exactly what I'm talking about. The game is full of the cheap anti player mechanics. When you throw a tracking grenade and the enemies flies across the map to avoid it. When you've stun locked an enemy and they magically teleport away. WHEN AN UNSTOPPABLE CHAMPION TELEPORTS ON TOP OF YOU AND STOMPS YOU TO DEATH! All of these high teir enemies don't feel challenging, they feel cheap. We as a community have been asking for a change to Tormentors since their introduction. A super aggressive fast enemy with a ton of health that can one shot, and suppress you and grapple you feels cheap, not challenging. Every time I play hard content I feel cheated more and more often. I think everyone kind of gets what I'm going for here. The players time is valuable, most of us have realized by now that you've spent more time trying to extend play time rather than make content replayable. The grind is literally unbearable to the point where it feels like I'm completing chores daily. This system is not sustainable for the average player.
I really don't have much to say about pvp aside from it just doesn't feel as good as D1 to me. Maybe I'm just not as good as I once was. Pvp to me is straight forward. I still enjoy it today. Sure theirs some fixes that can be made, but I don't hate it.
So I think what I'm getting at is you've created a game that is not player friendly, it is catered to the top 10-20% of players. It is so complicated that I forgotten more about it that I've learned. I've read a lot of the post on here and I see a community that is in pain and struggling to keep a part of them alive. I want destiny to succeed, I know all of us do. Maybe I'm off the mark here, but hopefully some of you 80%s will read this and agree. For those of you who don't I imagine being in that 20% must feel great. This is an open discussion, I welcome criticism and praise alike. Happy holidays Guardians.
