I've played d2 daily for over a year now and on/off for a couple of years before that so familiar with farming as well as crafting. Both can be frustrating especially waiting for the 5th red boarder or getting the 5 out of 5 to drop. However, in the past, both would eventually happen within a responsible amount of time. The decision to not craft the latest weapons has made farming a mostly frustrating grind because the desirable traits/perks have a much lower chance of dropping. I'm not sure how much lower yet but going to start charting the weapon drops.
I was using tonics to get the nox smg, gridskipper, chroma rush, scavenger's fait. I'm sick of delivering cookies to get the dawning weapons. I was farming different weapons after a 80 min tonic finished then switched to farming a single weapon until getting the ones I want. I'm on vacation so spent 3, 12 hr days to get an arrowhead break, accurized rounds, subsistence or dynamic sway reduction/kinetic tremors or kill clip, or target lock. In 3, 12 hr days no subsistence, 1 dynamic sway reductions, 1 kinetic tremors, maybe 5 kill clips, some target locks. Some arrowhead breaks and accurized rounds. What I got a truckload of is extended barrels, small/full bores, extended mags, to the pain, tunnel vision, heating up, frenzy. It was not uncommon to get 3 to the pain/frenzies in a row normally with extended barrel and extended mag. No subsistence drops in 36 hours? The closest one I got was a arrowhead break, tac mag, dynamic sway, reload masterwork. It makes no sense why I got a disproportionate number of to the pains.
I'm seeing the same thing with gridskipper. It's the latest one I've been using tonics to farm. I've yet to get what I want but getting mostly perpetual motion, killing wind, multikill, desperate measures. I have received a few lone wolf, zen moment, headseeker, none with decent barrels or mags.
Other weapons such as avalanche, glacioclasm I got 4 out 5 roles almost immediately but doubt I'll play either.
I can understand bungie's taking crafting away so players continue playing the activities. Not sure how others feel but I'll keep playing the activities with crafted weapons if I like them. The way farming has been for me, I now hate tomb of Elders and will not play it after getting the weapon roles. I farmed the mox smg periodically each day for 3 weeks to finally get attrition orbs min. I wanted attrition orbs/jolting feedback and ended up getting 2 in a row. Neither has arrowhead break or accurized rounds but at this point, I don't care. This will do. I started out liking tomb of Elders and would still play if farming the weapons wasn't such a horrible experience.
Actually, I believe the fix put in place a few weeks ago has caused this. In my opinion, traits/perks should be random. There's a 1:36 chance of getting a chroma rush with subsistence/kinetic tremors. Not sure how many total I received in 36 hrs but know without a doubt much more than 36. I don't expect to get what I want with 36 but close to it is reasonable. Deleting so many to the pain drops went from odd, to funny, to frustration.
The fix is make all weapons craftable, drop 5 red boarders in a reasonable amount of time, but then provide incentives maybe such as random alloy/shard drops, random exotic weapon drops for us to continue playing the activity.

I really don’t want crafting back, all weapons should drops should be worth checking at least and farming red borders mean no drop is worthwhile and once you have your 5 red borders then no drop after is worth it. However, more way to target weapons and limit perk pools is needed to make the grind worthwhile. I also think a hybrid system of maybe changing the masterwork or one perk for another would be a good option.
