Is empathy a thing?
Me and some friends were talking about empathy, and one of them said something to the effect of "empathy is just about making others like you, so you benefit.". I am having a hard time getting around this idea, so here I am. Thoughts?

Empathy is being able to feel what someone else is feeling and being their to actually help. Sympathy is being apologetic but not necessarily caring on a personal level. Narcissism is pretending to empathize while also trying to manipulate someone in a rather callous and selfish manner if it benefits only you in the long run...
