• Once is happenstance. Twice is coincidence. Three times? That’s a pattern. Bungie’s excuse doesn’t pass the smell test with me.

  • It's a shame they couldn't have stolen some of the good ideas people have had to improve the game over the last few years.

    • It just baffles me why they would steal art for Marathon, when it was an established IP, albeit dormant before Bungie decided to remake it.

      • Just looked this up. Shame she does not have the resources or will to sue. She would win easily and probably in a big way. The pattern of art theft at bungie is not just concerning, it seems to indicates it is intentional and maybe a coordinated effort. Bungie said there was a lack of oversight and that some laid off dev did this without any knowledge, I would say they are lying through their teeth to try and escape serious judgement. The morally and ethically correct thing to do would pay the person whatever they ask and then add 10% to the total. Then issue a formal public apology admitting wrong doing.

        • I wish copyright laws weren’t so obscure. I keep trying to measure how different something needs to be from an original IP to not be considered derivative, but the line is so obscure that I can’t figure it out. In theory, Bungie can take anything that is considered “derivative work,” but it’s super scummy. I have no clue who is in the legal right for any of these cases. The Marathon one is crazy though if all those images are actually in the game. Those are almost one-to-one replicas.

They didn’t even take her signature off the assets they straight ripped from her portfolio. Insane.

                • Bungie always has an out with this stuff. It’s someone else’s fault or this responsibility was “outsourced” so they had no idea. This just highlights the massive “skill issue” at Bungie studios and shows how their leadership is simply ok with ripping people off. Own your mistakes Bungie!! I’d say show some integrity but it’s simply not possible for them to do that. Anyone know what their mission statement is?

                    • I'm about 98% confident that the Red War lawsuit is bunk. That guy is trying to claim basic Hero's Journey beats and story elements based on the same point in our history (Romans/Spartans, to be specific) as his original idea. Not to mention it's come to light that things he claims were his were published after Bungie had already released the content, meaning there's no way it could be stolen. This says nothing about how he claims aspects that aren't even published anywhere were somehow stolen from him. The guy was trying to get a settlement to avoid court fees and it's not working for him. Other than that one specific case, Bungie is pretty definitively caught red-handed stealing art assets again. I'm not exactly surprised, though; look at the people on their team and tell me there's a truly creative bone in any one of them. They get through life aping other peoples' work, hoping no one checks it, and once they get their foot through the door of a major studio it all comes back to bite them in the -blam!-. It's a tale as old as DEI.

The mismanagement is crazy. All that money, all that time and they're still incapable of producing things on their own - or at least going through the correct channels to get creators onboard. It's not even a good look to use already created media - even if you do everything right to get it. If you see something you like then just hire that person and make them create NEW things for you in that artstyle! It's like they're going out of their way to tarnish their own reputation at this point, because no one could unknowingly be this incompetent. I'm really on the fence with the claim of plagiarism regarding the Red War story though. It's so generic that someone is bound to have mentioned something similar in the past. Hell, you can probably find similar things for every big franchise - from Star Wars to LOTR. The thing that makes me even remotely give the claim some benefit of doubt is that Bungie has seemingly tried to hide the evidence. It makes no sense to have wiped the Earth of its creation. They can't even produce a script? It's just sus.

                        • The Nerf one is kinda BS. Someone used their art of AoS as inspiration for making their own art that looks like it. Of course they are going to be extremely similar! But the rest... Yeah. Yikes.

                        • The funniest bit about the stolen art in marathon is that some of the ones they used LITERALLY has the original artists name RIGHT ON THEM. Also, a few marathon art team members were following the artist too

                        • The red war campaign one is false. The rest are true. The red war one is claiming things like the word failsafe which the guy himself confirmed they're used completely different is stolen. Not joking either Bungie's failsafe: A character in a ship His Failsafe: A device that can change gravity with a failsafe mechanism Or his claims of Bungie stealing the exo's which is immediately debunked because his story came out AFTER d1 where exo's were introduced His next claim is the story but that fails on the grounds of both him and bungie using the basic "Heroes journey" as a base with very little differences from the template. Which a template like heroes journey can't be copyrighted. His next and biggest issue is the red legion since both are named red legion and wear red armor. Man I wonder where the red legion is based from? Man if only there was an army known for wearing red colors....oh well maybe he's right here I can't think of anything. Btw the only reason his lawsuit is even moving is because the judge is being weird. He's not allowing bungie to use 3rd party as proof yet they allowed him to use 3rd party WITHOUT proof? Because yes it sounds like they're still trying to actually find the dudes story. And my last thing to point out is D2 likely started development around Taken King possibly even before which his story if I remember came out around Rise of Iron (Granted I can't really find much on the "release" date of his book)
