The dungeon quests tied to Vesper’s Host and Sundered Doctrine have been such a grueling experience to complete. The struggle of both quests has been entirely attributable to soft locks, despite the quests themselves being quite interesting and simple to complete. The fact that these quests are tied to title completion is so disheartening for players that are cursed with the soft locks, and by the time you resolve these quests’ issues, they’ll be considered somewhat old content.
Vesper’s Quest:
I cannot believe that this quest has been bugged for over half a year, it’s actually insane. My experience with this quest was generally pretty smooth until I arrived at step 6, in which none of the puzzles would populate for me no matter what I tried.
After hours of attempting to troubleshoot the puzzles, I could only fix it by having a friend that had never done the dungeon take my checkpoints and load up the dungeon himself wherever the puzzles were supposed to be. Only after joining him in that order could I get these puzzles to appear. He had to join me, take my checkpoint, relaunch it himself, then invite me and leave on three separate puzzles just so I could get through the quest, unbelievable.
I’d also have him leave before I completed any of the puzzles as I was worried it would bork his quest down the line as well. This quest was absolutely tiresome to fix and the fact that it’s still giving people issues over 6 months after release is just sad. It’s likely the main reason that the “Unleashed” seal is so rare.
Sundered Doctrine’s Quest:
This quest also presents players with soft locks as they cannot progress their quest due to the hidden research logs not populating and not being attainable. My experience with this quest was smoother than Vesper’s, but I still had massive issues with it towards the end.
After completing the entire quest on my main, making sure not to grab it on any other characters in fear of it bugging out like Vesper’s, I could not pick up the very final research paper that upgrades your initiate level from “Tier 3 Initiate” to “Fully Initiated”. Which meant I did the entire quest but was still left without the ability to use the loot focusing function as I was not fully initiated.
The only fix I found was to run the whole quest again on another character and only then could I grab that final paper to become fully initiated. At that point, I finished the quest yet again on a third character in fear of the focusing function somehow breaking down the line if I hadn’t finished the quest there too.
Conclusion:
All in all, this year of dungeon quests has absolutely killed my confidence in these quests’ ability to function properly and not end up screwing you out of progression or rewards down the line.
It’s almost a joke how long it’s taken for these to be fixed, as I still know friends that are experiencing a variety of issues with both of these quests.
It really sucks to tell friends what they might need to do to dodge soft locks on what should be a fun and interactive quest rather than just running through the quest with them. It surely doesn’t increase their motivation to get through these quests or rerun the dungeon.
I know this was a bit of a ramble and most people likely won’t read it at all, but if anyone from Bungie does read this- know that your playerbase as a whole has had more issues with these quests than enjoyment from these quests. Shape it up, please.
