Why do you play solo?

This is a genuine question. There is always complaints from solo players and there was an enormous amount of backlash about dual destiny. Please enlighten me, those of you who play alone. :)

  • I tried using a mic back in D1. One player was a young kid who kept say, "Hello? Hello? Is anyone there?" Two others were talking about building a deck and what screws to use. Took me right out of the fantasy. Also I won't tolerate bullies and, since it's illegal to hunt them down, I just play by myself. My complaint is that I pay the same as everyone else, but have access to less content, unless I want to turn pro and devote my life to Destiny. Or is 7,000+ hours already being devoted?

  • Because I have a job, wife, & kids who all take priority over a game. I only have a few hours to play at night & for the wife/kids, I respectfully keep my gaming experience quiet so they can sleep. Most of my clan has left & those that are left don't play when I'm online.

      • It's a personal choice. Sometimes it just needs to be done for peace of mind if nothing else. The amount of -blam!- you can run into in this game via lfg has reached epidemic proportions, toxicity is rampant combined with an endless supply of elitist clods -blam!- you to have the last resting place of Eddie Hoffa, be able to change base metal into gold, know the location of Atlantis and have direct line to God.

      • Autism, avoid any form of communication at all costs. Saw a news thing today, a Welsh professional footballer, she said she'd rather drive 40 miles to find a petrol station with self service, rather than to 1 really close where you have to go in & pay a person. It's very hard to explain but I felt that at my core, it is what it is.

      • I started off playing with my son and our friends during D1 doing raids and nfs every week. When D2 came out everyone quit except me and my son. We spent the first part of red war using lfg and it was a nightmare lol Every raid took forever because we always seemed to be the ones teaching everyone. When Forsaken came out my son started his career and our schedules clashed and we barely found time to play together anymore, I stopped doing raids altogether and started playing solo. For me it was a game where I could always find something to do that would help me in some way down the road, I got really into soloing dungeons so that became my motivation to play. Grinding power, weapons and armour was all so I could solo flawless the new dungeon that was coming out. So as you can probably tell I’m not too thrilled with edge of fate atm, they just cut my motivation in half, so I see little reason to play until winter now.

      • I play solo mainly as it increases the immersion of being in the game world. Also it depends on whether I have time to be semi afk doing stuff but also interacting in real life. Additionally there is nothing worse than playing a space combat game with a party member playing metal over their mic, or shouting to other people whilst on mic, or speed running/tortoiseing a mission. Solo means I can do things at my speed in my own way. I also play with a small group of friends, and we do all aspects of the game together. But we all like time solo playing too.

      • I'll join groups for some content as long as it's no mic required (like most dungeons or anything with matchmaking), but otherwise I enjoy the game a lot more alone. I can either have fun, or I can hear someone talking, but never both.

        • After D2 came out and my clan broke up I became very antisocial when it comes to video games. Now if I need a group I'll run with two of my sons. One is good at Destiny as long as it's not PvP while the other is a good distraction.

        • Social Anxiety Bad Experiences with Toxic people Peer Pressure Sometimes you just want to do your own thing Those that say, "Just LFG" , don't understand the problem, we know how to find teammates, the problem comes when an activity requires us to communicate with said teammates I acknowledge Destiny was built on freinds playing together, but that's just not a reality for some, if not the majority of players Especially in the current state of D2, when most people's freinds list have retired from Destiny for good

        • I see a lot of comments about "I play games to have fun", mate have you ever played games with friends? Have you ever made a friend in a game? Solo is fun, but playing with friends is always better. Even with randos it can be fun sometimes. If you want to run solo it's fine. But then don't complain more than half the loot isn't obtainable. Because it is, you just don't want to team up for that content.

        • I don’t just play solo, but I always liked being able to go solo into a public patrol location to shoot things, try out guns and builds, and jump in to help another guardian doing a public event. It was something I enjoyed doing when I had time to kill and wanted some low key fun.

          • Sometimes I just wanna blow alien heads off while keeping one paw in the hamster wheel, but while also not talking to people or dealing with them in any way. One annoyance is when I come up with or see a vid for a fun build but then run with gigachad meta players who mop ads up so fast I can't tweak or learn much about my build except that it (and me) are slower than eager edgelords with their double rocket sidearm prismatic nonsense

          • Because I hate being forced into a strike or some kind of matchmaking activity to further a quest line. I've had too many annoyances to put up with the nonsense that goes on with speedrunners, mid-run quitters, or folks who don't know what to do. And I DON'T want to play a higher level of the activity to avoid matchmaking! I want to take my time, play at my speed, and figure it out on my own. I want to move the story along. I'm not looking for "friends". I'm not looking for carries. I'm looking for fun on my own terms. The loot will drop as the loot drops. No biggie. If people can't understand that, that's their problem, not mine. It's BUNGIE who needs to understand it!

          • For most people it's because they game when they can, and that doesn't always allow room for organising a group. If they've spent all day on the phone, working out complex problems or having to adopt an 'image' for a customer facing job, the very last thing they want to do is spend their evening on chat, working out puzzles or fitting a 'role' like a lot of group activities want them to. For a lot, gaming is their 'me time' when they just want to immerse themselves in something atypical to the life they've just spent half their day living, and that often means retreating to the pleasure of their own company. They spend their working lives being told how to think, act and behave a certain way, doing things they don't want to be doing and having to deal with people they don't like. Their leisure time should be spent doing the exact opposite.

          • Because I don't want to hear others views on society while I'm playing a game. Because streamer elitism has made some believe the game has to be played the the way datto suggest

            • Because 9 times out of 10 I have to stop what I’m doing to sit in the tower for up to 45 min trying to find something to do with the other player, after lfg fails to provide another player who isn’t a drunk/high rage quitter. Not like I have to raid or run gms for something I will 9/10 never use.

            • I haven’t had a fireteam friend group since the Forsaken days. Most recent friend didn’t get Heresy and hasn’t been on here. Even so, I’m into triumphs and titles. Not everyone is and so I’ve relied on the LFG community for years. It’s not a lack of trying (If I’m such a pain, I wouldn’t have accomplished anything, let alone a regular raid). I just don’t think this game is good at the friendship angle. Either you’re in or not (exclusion). The game changes coulda changed the demographic of people that still play. Or I dunno, comes down to me anyway

            • I play solo because I'm more of a casual player. I always see people comment "get good" and stuff to casual players and I just don't like dealing with people. I don't like using a headset/mic either. I'm not the best at jumping puzzles and stuff like that so I would tend to hold up the fireteam as they wait for me to catch up etc. Yeah it's mostly about dealing with people. I haven't done dungeons or raids because of that. And people want to speed run stuff while I'm not sure what I need to do. Sometimes it's hard to keep up.

            • we wanna go at our own pace, rather than race for 3 kills at a time. pathfinder bounties done much faster. no interest in discord or lfg. plus another 10 reaasons. was raised on games like onimusha, ninja gaiden etc, etc, it feels stupid shooting fireteam members in the back as they continually try to block your shots. they call it coop but rarely feels that way. i dont always wanna use eager edge, ive already heard every elitist reply. get, good, get friends, get lfg , etc, etc, etc. ad nauseaum. we just wanna relax and enjoy a game mostly. even though competing for kills is fun sometime.

            • Well, eleven years ago... I thought destiny was a game where you completed the campaign solo but also had the option of playing in 3's & 6's as well for some activities. I really liked that idea. Then, I quickly found out that not everyone plays Destiny like me... I would be killing everything and kept getting dragged forward. So eventually I found like minded individuals and we formed a pretty cool family. Those were good times, truly. Bungie forced my clan away 2x with their insane decisions. I was the only member of my clan who stayed. Much like Eris, I've kind of been haunted by my fire team... (Also), Destiny was soooo popular there were a lot of undesirable people I've played with since. Some okay- others ( mostly) downright unacceptable. I began to play alone. Went from 3 characters, to 2, to mostly 1. The game just got worse and worse and worse. The neglect by Bungie was astounding! We're basically here now. I enjoy shooting space bad guys in the head. I never play for titles, or power. I hate the progression, rng, how drops work. I think Destiny is one of the coolest IP's but a horrible game. Funny thing is, EoF seasonal power grind doesn't really interest me at all, but, my hope is as a game... W/ all the modifiers, it might actually intrigue me more!

            • There's only solo or getting into a group of 8-10 people, so you can consistently run content. LFG is not great. Discord and other apps are alienating people who dont use those apps. When you do find a group, you're just a temp and they dont need an 11th or 12th on the F-list.. So you play solo some more.. then get bored and look for hours or days for that group who's down to let you smash through a raid.
