Numerous times III through Lodi calls Ikora “Commander.” They even make a point to stress this in the final cutscene with a dramatic pause.
Ikora is not a Commander…. Zavala is.
RIP
The Old Vanguard.

technically Ikora is a Commander (warlock and vanguard) Zavala is the head Commander of the vanguard

I can’t remember where but Zavala is mentioned in the new expansion. They said he is recovering from the battle with the witness. He was pretty messed up mentally after that so it makes sense they don’t want to include him for a while. He basically has PTSD from losing his ghost and the light, like a soldier would have if they lost their arm or leg. Losing a part of themselves.

Edited by Kareem4361: 7/28/2025 2:29:30 PMShe's the commander, because Zavala is not able to lead, she is also the master teacher for all the guardians at the tower, the oldest, and most experienced. Zavala has been dropping the ball as a commander since the final shape, but the story writers used it, and turned it into a plot, and somehow into a win (for guardians). I miss the original commander too, it's just not the same.

It is kinda curious because after TFS in the montage it showed Zavala, Ikora and Crow patrolling outside of the city together. Now he gets sidelined with barely an explanation.

Zavala isn’t a guardian anymore so he’s likely not the Vanguard commander now. Although it was a bit jarring to hear this, that’s likely the reason.

Ikora has been a far more proactive member of the Vanguard. Zavala has been getting gut punch after gut punch ever since Beyond Light. Dude deserves to sleep.
