I miss offline single player games

Whatever happened to single player story games? I know this has a campaign, but this is an online-only game.... Any suggestions for new(ish) single player games I should try?

  • I like Sniper Elite 4. I don't like 5 and 6. 4 has a long solo story line which takes place in WWII. There is a co-op feature, but you can ignore it. I've played though several times because you can run maps in different ways. Saint's Row is a good franchise. The third one is my favorite. Complete customization of your character; gender, build, tattoos, jewelry, clothing. Lots of cars to collects too. Open world like GTA, but the cars handle way better.

    • Offline single player games are chillin right now. AAA games like God of War or Last of Us have the epic, cinematic games covered. And there's a ton of Ubisoft-tier open-world "rpgs" coming out all the time, like Horizon: Forbidden West (which is one of the best in this category). I'm pretty sure that any FromSoft game can be played offline with no trouble. And that's not even mentioning every indie game ever. Almost all of them are singleplayer because netcode is hard and maintaining servers requires constant monitoring. The real question is whatever happened to splitscreen? That -blam!- used to be mandatory in every game that came out, it felt like.

      • Most RPGs should give you that experience.

        • With how games are "licences" now and are required to "check in" with a service to function if you want a true offline game you're going to need to do some research and invest in older games and hard copies otherwise you're going to have a hard time....worst case is using emulators if you want to cut the cord and play newer games but that has risks...

          • They’re literally everywhere. I’m playing them almost all the time. Like, just hop onto the store page and start scrolling through without looking for anything in particular. Most of what you’ll see are single player games. But I can offer specific recommendations too. What genres do you like?
