I thought i was crazy until I scrolled through X and Reddit and saw many people saying the same thing. I am not 100% sure what changes Bungie made to Trials matchmaking or if it was intentional, but there seems to be super tight lobby balancing in the open skill playlist. In addition to this, my matchmaking takes longer than it should to find a game, it seems to favor putting me in 2 stacks even though im solo, and I play the same guys over and over again game after game. Many of these players are not in my region and the connection is not great which clearly is not connection based matchmaking like it is supposed to be. My first few games of the week are completely normal. It seems once i start dropping a high weekly kd, some type of performance based matchmaking kicks in, in addition to the lobby balancing.
I am not 100% on what exactly is going on but the paragraph above is my theory based on playing hundreds of games of trials every weekend. What I do know forsure, is matchmaking in Trials is not working the way it did last season. I would like Bungie to at least acknowledge this and let us know if these changes are intended or a bug.
Before you tell me populations low, get good, etc. take a scroll through reddit or youtube and you’ll find many higher level players saying the exact same thing. I thought I was crazy at first too.
Edit: upon closer inspection, my 1 win lighthouse card says matchmaking is “weekly performance” when i search instead of “open”. This basically proves what I was saying above

Edited by NotCreative123: 8/16/2025 5:54:37 PMLol "good" players rarely struggle in Trials, and there is clearly no Lobby Balancing. Go play Competitive for an hour. Now go play Trials for an hour. Then, edit your post. EDIT: And if you truly believe Trials uses Lobby Balnving, then why are you playing solo? If you are a good player, it hurts you to play solo, and if you are a bad player, it helps you, so why complain?

Pretty much your 1v3ing every game and if u die you just take the L

Forced wins and losses man to try its best to keep you at 50% WR. Game has already decided who to put on your team and if you’re winning or not before you even load in.

Notice how Mercules has been MIA, he usually posts in crucible guidebook and responds when it’s something favorable towards bungie / or to disprove rumors. He works on the crucible for bungie and he’s been silent when these topics have been posted fairly regularly every weekend. That should tell people what it is.

Well I get to play in the flawless pool without going flawless 👌 I’m just lucky that way.

Edited by The Warrior: 8/16/2025 4:45:11 PMYes there’s some type of lobby balancing. I made a post on the Reddit the first week trials was out ( and every week since ) and those turds just delete the post. I’ve been playing trials every weekend it’s been available for years and go flawless every weekend. I noticed this bs right away, even it’s the lowest populated weeks trials is never this bad or “unlucky” with matchmaking. Dumb -blam!- Reddit mods delete the posts with people commenting on this but where there’s smoke there’s definitely a fire. I’m playing ascendant level players almost every single match and I’m on the worst duo 90% in a completely un winnable game. Bungie sees the numbers and knows exactly what they did / are doing. They’re milking players who actually play in and enjoy the playlists so that you’re playing an absurd amount of games to go flawless and that’s only if you’re very lucky. Meanwhile the rewards don’t reflect the amount of work that needs to be done to go flawless or put up a decent win streak. The mode would have to be reworked or mercies need to return if this is the way they’re going to do things.

I think what happened to me was I was at a 6 win streak and lost game 7. I reset card and all games after that seemed like more skill based matchmaking with some exceptions. I feel like they started matching me based on the 6 streak after the reset.
