A lot of us know Bungie has said that adding more vault space is not just flipping a switch. The problem is not server storage. It is that the client has to load every single item in your vault and keep it in memory, which is rough on old-gen hardware. That is why we keep hearing "it is complicated" whenever people ask for more vault slots.
So instead of just asking for more space, I wanted to suggest a different approach that could actually make sense within the current technical limits. The ideas below can be altered - it's just a base concept/idea. It's currently drafted to just cover armour.
# The idea
When you find an item with a specific archetype and tertiary stat combination, that roll is saved to your account as an unlock (server side).
You earn a new currency when dismantling items with new tertiary unlocks.
At an NPC (Rahool or a new vendor), you can take any item of that slot (for example a helmet) and spend the currency to swap the stats to one you have unlocked.
# Why this helps technically
The vault does not need to hold 20 "just in case" helmets. Once the unlock is stored, the client only needs to track a lightweight ID in your account data.
That means less data loaded into memory and no need to expand the vault size linearly.
This is safer for old consoles because it avoids choking on hundreds of near-duplicate items.
# Concerns Bungie might raise
## Loot chase becomes trivial
If players can just unlock everything, the chase is dead.
**Solution:** Put a steep cost on stat-swapping so it complements farming rather than replaces it. Seasonal or high-end currency could control the pace. You could still farm for the currency, but your result would be more deterministic.
## Implementation complexity
Bungie would need to build a Collections-like system for tertiary rolls, not just cosmetics.
**Solution:** Start small. Limit it to armour stats first, or only to certain archetypes, and expand later.
## Economy disruption
Fear of stockpiling the new currency.
**Solution:** Tie the unlock currency to dismantling, seasonal resets, or time-gated acquisition so it cannot be farmed infinitely on day one.
# Why this is worth considering
Vault bloat is the number one pain point for many long-time players.
Bungie has said vault expansion is not viable in the short term.
This system reduces vault load, gives players more agency over rolls, and still respects the RNG chase with costs and limits.
What do you all think? Would something like this feel good to play around with, or would it undermine the identity of Destiny's loot system?
