Vault AND QoL solution that isn't adding vault space?!
This is an idea that has been thrown around to some degree here and there due to exotic class items. But there's no better time than now for Bungie to make inventory management changes now that Armor 3.0 is out. Here's my idea that admittedly draws on past suggestions, but I want to bring to light again with how good it COULD be.
So ever since The final shape, the community has requested (NEEDED) exotic class items to be a selection tree within the item itself, right. Having all perks as a tree just like you see on light gg or foundry and the likes. Just select what you want to run and go. Not sure if you've had the combo drop? Just check. All of the ones that you haven't had drop are grey. And will grey out if you select one perk and the other half of the combo hasn't dropped. Sounds straight forward enough to understand. Nothing novel. Not even knew idea suggestion in this community.
HOWEVER...
With armor 3.0 it could then be applied to armor sets. Think about it. There are now even more items to hoard if you are trying to optimize fully, given the new set perks. Then you have the archetypes. Then you have the 4 different tertiary rolls per archetype.
The new armor sets basically have set stat rolls now just like the exotic class items. They just vary due to equipment tier (1 through 5). This is actually better. I love this new system. (Thank you Bungie)
Now, imagine, instead of hoarding the unreal amount of gear to have every combo of every set for whatever case may rise... you only had to keep 1 per set per slot (so 5 pieces per set). And every time you have a unique roll drop, it unlocks it for that set piece to be available to select. The game could track what is the highest tier of that stat you've had drop and would apply those stats. It could then reflect what tier the armor stats are currently where it shows tier already. (heck, Bungie already made the animation for when it changes up or down in loadouts visuals.)
How this affects quality of life in the game.
1) Vault Space: Obvious reason. Significantly less space needed to cover far more options.
2) Buildcrafting: With how armor 3.0 works, it's easier than ever to recommend builds to friends, and even suggest specific archetypes for stats. We all are used to saying "get to X numbers in X stats and go from there. But really we will soon be able to just say "you need 3 gunners, 1 brawler, and 2 bulwarks" or whatever (the tertiary stats make up the difference in tiers in most cases). Then you could go to your armor, select the archetype. Then it literally shows the tertiary stats you can apply. (What a world it would be, right?)
3) Leveling: You can just keep infusing same piece of gear on as you level. . . which, btw, is EXTRA important now that you always want to have highest power equipped for rewards. Instead of needing to swap pieces to meet stats for builds, then infusing into it (for sometimes silly amounts of material costs)... just select them in the already leveled piece you are wearing. Also makes infusing much more inviting for players, to know they don't actually lose the roll if it was better than they had somewhere out of sight out of mind (like the vault), just to be highest power.
4) Economy: As noted above, this makes infusion for more approachable and less of a requirement at the same time. Instead of having to abandon the tier 3 armor piece you've dumped thousands of cores, shards, unstable cores, etc into... because you just got a tier 4 or 5 of the roll you need.. it just automatically raises your stats on the piece you are wearing because you've found it now.
Side note, Bungie could make it to where masterworking was tied to the archetype, and that could have a memory too. Have a gold border around the archetype in selection. Have it flash red border or something to signify you need to remasterwork (maybe for lower cost, but honestly would be fine with same cost) since you found a higher tier of the archetype. This way it doesn't break the economy loop they want in the game completely.
5) Character Inventory: With Edge of Fate, there are 8 new armor sets. With this new system, you could theoretically hold all 8 new sets with one spot left over, and have all your buildcrafting desires covered on character, and still have space for an exotic or two in each slot. (postmaster might get mad at all the incoming items though) This would make adjusting builds so much faster for players, even just having a few sets on hand with all possible stat rolls.
6) Accident protection: We've all been there. We are mass deleting stuff after a farm session, only to delete something we wanted to keep. Lost forever, and need to fight RNG all over again. But it wouldn't have to be. See... with the suggested system.. every piece is that piece you just deleted. And best part is... you don't even have to go farm it again. Just go to collections and select what you just deleted. It has the memory of everything you've collected so far. The worst you are out is the materials you had invested into it, and what you will need to invest into it again. You also are far less likely to accidental delete due to being able to lock the 1 piece per slot to keep it safe, just saying)
7) Future proof: On that same note, collections gets a huge glow up in value as seasons... episodes... uh... expansions go on. We may not always want this armor set bonus taking up space, cause it's just not viable in the sandbox anymore or whatever. But for my WHAT IF guardians out there... that's right.. you can safely delete, and recollect from collections if that set bonus ever seems like WOW THIS WOULD DESTROY THE SANDBOX (lol). No need to tie up the space in the vault for that occasion.
So yeah... That's my suggestion. I really can't see downside, though I am quite ignorant to the backend side of game development, and how much it takes to track all that. So maybe it is too much of an ask. But man what inventory could be...
Can anybody think of reasons this would be bad? I don't see it affecting the looter shooter feel as you still have to go out and farm for it all. Just would make life easier once you have done so.
Does this sound like a great idea? Feedback is welcome.
