If you play multiple characters, you're already burning through materials leveling up / masterworking gear. Another limiting factor for infusion is needing gear that is a higher level so that controls how high you can go, but cores & total drops control how many pieces you can get close to your max seasonal power. When everything will be reduced to 200 to start next season why do we need a currency to regulate this during the season?

Its not even the currency, diablo has tons of currencies used for upgrading . The real issue is how exorbitant the amount is when you jump up even 5 or six levels and how few items we get. In other rpg style games you get mats for killing ads, bosses, looting, mining/gathering, breaking down armor . Bungie seems absolutely terrified to give us more rewarding activities. We need more gear to drop, mats, and currency.
