We had upgrade modules that works just fine and now we have unstable cores which does basically the same but now require more grind to upgrade just once and they also have expiry date compared to upgrade modules that are permanent.
And to make things more questionable, upgrade modules are still in the game so what's the logic here? Why bloat the game with unnecessary things that are just temporary? Just to ensure everyone does the grind from scratch after a time period? Just a hamster wheel that goes nowhere?

1000% THIS! 👆🏻 Man this game has turned into a steaming pile of 💩. The tactics they are using for extending gameplay is pathetic!
-
"Just a hamster wheel"..... There ya go.
-
It's all to arbitrarily increase gameplay time.

Edited by Zodleon: 8/31/2025 11:17:29 PMSame logic as legendary shards but you don't get to hoard them this time. So yknow, forces repeated player engagement because unnecessary mobile game type resource.
basically the same but now require more grind to upgrade just once
Answered your own question there bucko.
-
Can't hoard them for a new season, and you'll be forced into another artificial grind. That's why they get rid of a lot of things or cap stuff. Can't have the veterans keep their stuff. Gotta take it away.

It's fine.

Bungie: Grind = content
-
They are just trying to inflate their player numbers but if this continues more and more players will leave. The power grind is pointless if they reset it for Renegades, they dont give us any decent drops of unstable cores or gear. With the grind in Ops I am now basically forced to use one setup and have given up upgrading any other weapons because I never use them. Everything in the game now is designed to torture and make our lives hell, Bungie learn about this thing called FUN! You want us to play fireteam ops then increase the rewards and even make some of the modifiers Fun not Torture. Give us something like greatly increased grenade or Super recharge, greater heavy ammo drop or even like unlimited on a certain type like rocket launchers or something. With Destiny Rising out now I am feeling less and less for Destiny 2, I can jump into Rising do something new and different each time, not repeat the same thing over and over knowing in 3 months they will reset me.

Im not sure if others have said this but unstable cores are just purple shards with a diff color. They got rid of them to make glimmer "more meaningful" but then in this new expansion they just go straight back to the same mechanic? Its likely exactly what you said, to ensure players feel "motivated" for the grind. Gatta get the money if you want to buy the upgrade. To put the D1 vet on the same page as the day 1 newbie. Its bad... just bad.

I have picked up some, but have zero clue where to use them or what to use them on. Frankly I could care less about them at this point. The whole expansion is trash: - Portal scoring is not clearly defined. As are none of the bonus multipliers. Why do I only get a 3.3 bonus and my friends gets a 10.4 bonus? - Lack of new content - the portal has very few things to do for each activity, which lends those activities to burn out and abuse of the easiest ones to complete - Total lack of rewards for activities - Power progression sucks and get reset in december to chase another 300+ power levels - lack of vault space - sunsetting of gear Frankly I am not concerned with unstable cores, what they do or how they are used, because the game is a HOT flaming dumpster fire of a mess.
-
Break things and leave the mess to someone else to clean up. Waste time on complete nonsense such as tank battle and Marathon. Or was that the silent part.
-
Well now you can dismantle the gear you worked for to upgrade another gear, so instead of upgrading 2 piece of gear you can dismantle and upgrade 1, or wait till Tuesday for the reset
-
I love how it was supposed to “simplify” resources economy but turn into a -blam!- show.
-
You already know the logic behind it, you said as much in your post. GRIND.

My understanding is a BS excuse to cover the real truth. The BS excuse is players with more materials had an edge and could upgrade weapons/gear faster so to level the field they added unstable cores. So everyone started at 0. The real reason is to extend play time as the cores you need to upgrade goes up so eventually leveling up costs hundreds to thousands of unstable cores. I suspect the idea of featured exotics plays into this so now I need to have different leveling loadouts for my preferred playstyle AND the advent guard modifier. Then the icing on the cake: so people who play more don’t have an edge they expire AND your gear resets to 200.
