This has been covered in responses to several other posts about Haunted Altars softlocking, however it’s always a good idea to have this sort of information at the head of a post rather than requiring players to soft through replies in order to find it, so here goes:
As you are likely aware the boss starts the encounter protected by an immunity shield. To drop the shield you must complete the Ritual Circle which will cause the Shriekers surrounding the area to open up and bombard the boss.
The intended mechanic is for the Shriekers to go dormant (ie. close back up) after the boss’s shield drops in order to prepare for the following immunity phase.
However, if the boss’s health drops to half before the Shriekers go dormant, they will likely only partially damage the shield for the second immunity phase and then close, causing the nodes to summon the Ritual Circle again to fail to respawn, resulting in the softlock.
In order to prevent the softlock from occuring, you must avoid burning down the boss until the Shriekers have had a chance to go dormant after they have dropped the shield for the first time.
The simplest way to achieve this is to simply refrain from damaging the boss until the Shriekers have gone dormant, as this will hopefully make up for the likelihood that one or more people in the party are unaware of the softlock and go in guns blazing.
Others have stated that in the case of a softlock the encounter can be reset by through a party wipe, however I have not tested this personally so I cannot vouch for this at the moment; best to simply avoid the softlock in the first place.

Should the boss softlock, throw the pumpkin bombs at them to manually take down their shield.

the saddest and never ending thing with Bungie that they think all players are mind readers or geniuses or something like that because they NEVER TELL ANYTHING, not even some hints to what to do. 99% of players end up having to go to the internet to find out how to play.

Thanks for the info OP, but it shouldn't be up to the community to figure out how to get around bugs that should never occur if the game is properly tested. I was looking forward to this reset but because of all the crap that comes with new content recently, I haven't even logged on yet. And that's after spending £65 on a new controller 🤬

1 ReplyIt only takes one or two who don’t read the forums etc and it’s screwed.it does help a tad though.

Yeah I'm either gonna skip the event or wait for them to fix this game breaking bug that shouldn't exist. Bungie needs to build another QA department.

Party Wipe works

Question is it platform related??? I ask because I ran 7 or 8 runs yesterday and never had an issue. Then I saw all the threads here, on reddit and vids on the softlock issues so naturally am paranoid of running more till fixed. Or just run run solo to get candy and not worry about completions. Speaking of questions, I saw all these reports trying to figure out how to get the mask candy mod? Uhmmm HOW???

Good post. Can confirm you can wipe the whole team and restart the boss. Be prepared as some muppets still use super and burn the boss down to soft lock and you have to repeat it. The best suggestion is don’t use your super at all until boss is in second stage.

Was really looking forward to Fotl, my favourite event. If the boss was cheesable, or able to emote instakill and drop multiple tier 5’s to benefit the player it would be fixed yesterday! But now its the usual prevarication, event is on for another week so nothing will happen until reset.

People are trolling and soft locking boss in fallen bunker now

Trying to teach the nukes to stop nuking... Interesting approach Bungie... I'm surprised you keep trying to insert these morality lessons into the game... It's still about loot and nuke... I don't think you'll be able to train them in any other mentality...

Or Bungie could just remove the stupid health gate.
-
2 RepliesOr maybe bungie could just do away with the stupid damage gates to try and prolong activity lengths, I am in no way insulting your helpful post btw, but this is all just typical of bungie logic and serves themselves right, they should have known people like to burn through bosses, not tickle them till they say stop

Don't worry, I'm sure they've scheduled a patch to fix this in December.

Just avoid matchmaking

Burn the boss down, if it soft locks, wipe do it again. This method has worked everytime for me.

Edited by Stalkholm: 10/22/2025 1:52:13 AMYou might also add that Warlock Buddies count as DPS and can also soft lock the encounter. So Warlocks, make sure you don't bring Stacy or Archibald to the dance.

4 RepliesAnd if it softlpcks on the boss just wipe and restart.....
-
4 RepliesThat's just at the final boss, it frequently soft locks at multiple other points as well though.

Thank you, happy spooky season!
