So Datto did his yearly Thoughts on Destiny, and I kind of wanted to share my thoughts a little about how I am feeling about the current state of Destiny as well.
As someone who adores Destiny and has stuck with the game since near the start of D1, I honestly agree a lot with Datto's feedback and vision. But I am also someone who doubts a D3 will be exactly what everyone is wanting or expecting it to be, and I wouldn't blame Bungie specifically for that. I will say that a D3 may rekindle some lost flames, such as mainstream attention, and a interest for many people to come to Destiny with a new light, but I also think that will be a blade held against the veteran players of Destiny, who are consistently playing D2 in whatever state it is in, thus hurting the current populace of Destiny players.
Now this also has to be determined if a D3 may kill off D1 as in shutting down servers and keeping D2 and D3 online, or if D3 takes place in some other reality, universe, timeline, etc. If there were ever to be a Destiny 3, I would want it to not include our current Guardians or be our current Guardians. Also, I personally do not want to return back to a place before our eyes were open towards the truth behind the Light and Dark, at least in this timeline/universe. I think a Destiny 3 would have to pull a Rising, and take place in an alternative universe/timeline, in which events or concepts are fairly similar, but still very much different. Bungie could also take the route of killing off our Guardian, and allowing us to make new Guardians or Lightbearers, and have us play new characters that have to learn or acquire various abilities through leveling/content. I am not one of those people to hype up playable non-humans, but I personally wouldn't be against it either, though I would like the focus of Destiny to still have a large human element to it, and mainly have that human focus to it (though this is just my opinion, and of course could change based on concepts and narrative).
Destiny 3 will hopefully not be the same or too similar as Destiny 2. In fact I will go back to what Datto has said, and hope that D3 will be more like a MMO and focus on being an MMO, or focusing on making it a cooperative shooter, with optional online and offline elements, to preserve story elements and moments. I am not certain on if there is a narrative that D3 could offer, that could rekindle the spark within many Destiny fans, regardless if they are Destiny 1 or 2 fans. It may bring in many new players who want to see what a Destiny 3 might be, but I don't think it will survive as long as Destiny 1 and 2 has.
I personally don't want to see Destiny end quite yet, mainly because I want the universe to actively grow. A story may end, but that doesn't mean the universe has to. The Fate saga has a lot of really interesting narrative moments and ideas, and I think if Bungie is able to cook and wrap it all up into Destiny 2, and separate the Light and Dark saga into it's own game, replacing Destiny 1, calling it Destiny: The Light and Darkness Saga, and Destiny 2: The Fate Sage, I think that would help bring a more fitting idea on what direction Destiny is going in, and be the best course of action for Bungie in showing that they still have a narrative to tell.
To sort of conclude, we still have 5 years of the Fate saga to go, and I personally do not want another game to split the saga in half, like D1 and D2 did, and hope the Fate saga can remain in Destiny 2 for these 5 years, and when they are ready to release the next chapter of Destiny with Destiny 3. I am personally not looking for massive innovation with a Destiny 3, but a responsibility to narratively grant people the FULL story from start to finish, without any hiccups or roadblocks. For the most part, Destiny doesn't need to be crazy or unique, because Destiny is already crazy interesting and unique. We just need certainty that the content we are given, is kept safe, comprehensive, and accessible for all, regardless of what type of player they may be, or what era of Destiny they are apart of.
We don't need a Destiny 3, we need Destiny.

IMO in order for Destiny 3 to be good it needs to be made by new developers and not the current crew who can't even do simple things like maintenance or a running animation without one's feet clipping through one's cloak on new sets. I would even go so far as to say a new company (Guerrilla) should take the reins from Bungle who have taken the property as far as they can.

If Destiny 3 happens, the main thing I want to see is sustainable PvP and PvEvP that is well maintained and regularly built upon. That’s the stuff that keeps me engaged long after I’ve finished a campaign. Crucible has been incredibly successful in this game, but Bungie has never quite figured out what they want to do with it and Gambit has so much potential. I think Bungie really dropped the ball with both. I’d like to see more commitment from Bungie to core activities with high replay value. In general, I’d rather have less stuff, but more quality.

1 ReplyEdited by THE GRIND IS REAL: 12/20/2025 12:10:08 PMDestiny 3 won't happen ,bungie has lost faith from the majority of players and killed the playerbase off from catering to players like datto. Game seems like its in a great spot atm but sometimes good changes come all but too late
