FOMO Hurts Buildcrafting & Destiny as a Whole

As we all know, Destiny 2 has been on the decline with Final Shape losing players in droves over its year and then Edge of Fate releasing updated systems that weren't flushed out and integrated properly & fully into the existing game but that's another convo to be had. At its decline, this argument may seem unnecessary being it may be too late. Bungie's one long-standing practice of FOMO (fear of missing out) is introducing a new seasonal activity or a holiday event with new weapons & armor and it eventually going away along with the weapons & armor. Then on the whim of Bungie, those certain seasonal weapons may show up in a weapon rotation between Xur and Banshee-44 that probably have a roll that is less than desirable. Bungie sets this culture of FOMO where it hurts the game more. Regardless of the reason on why we, the players, don't play at certain times whether life happens or the game is just not good, why should the player get penalized? New activities, weapons, & armor drives the game further and it's understandable some assets of the game need to put to the wayside to drive the game further but when it comes to weapons & armor for buildcrafting those need to always have a place to farm. If an activity or event has to go away at least give the weapons & armor a home to go obtain them thereafter; Maybe activities that aren't going away like Dares of Eternity or Onslaught. The 2025 solstice event released the SMG Yeartide Apex and the armor set bonus Lustrous (Cauterize & Photogalvanic). To a returning player or a new player that sees these items being used by others and wants to acquire them to make their own build, they can't. The event ended and no alternate way to obtain these items afterwards were implemented. Same for Mint Retrograde and Lionfish-4fr; new DLC came through and these weapons weren't put into an alternate activity to go farm and now can only be obtained from Hawthorne's Weekly Clan Engrams, if one is lucky to even get it. Buildcrafting is the cornerstone to this game. Not being able to build the way someone wants because they did not play during that one time to obtain the item is unacceptable.

  • You have to wait for the event to come back. Its that simple.

  • Fomo is 100% a personal issue and it isn't anyone else's responsibility to deal with you or anyone else missing out on something. Its also not the end of the world if you miss out on something.

is it me or “Destiny 2” started to look like a “Free-To-Play” (gotcha) game. Example; If you Don’t Pre-order or Buy the latest “Seasonal Pass” DLC, loot for those content is almost impossible to obtain after the Season. The “Gotcha” side of things is the Seasonal loot Only easily obtainable during the release window.

Bungie doesn’t care because FOMO feeds their playtime metrics. But I would be totally okay with seasonal or event rewards joining a loot pool sometime after their initial release. Just because something was an activity reward 3 years ago shouldn’t mean it’s lost to time. I’ve always wondered why they couldn’t use that kind of stuff to boost the quality and depth of the loot pool. The continual drip feed and then subsequent cut off of unique rewards doesn’t do anything to improve the experience for active new players or recruiting to resolve the declining player count. All it does is drive the existing player base into continued participation due to FOMO and constantly evolving metas. Exclusivity drives engagement, especially since they know streamers help shape that narrative. (And that’s not meant as a dig on the streamers) One of many things that just proves Bungie executives see us as nothing but paypigs willing to keep the lights on long enough for them to self immolate with Marathon.

    • Problem is, why introduce an event if you are going to release the weapons in the general player pool. Why play solstice then? Flair rewards are not it, they have been bad. Other than some years. If you are unable to play for the 3 weeks and even better, 6 months of EoF then you might want to wonder if this is the game for you. Kindly said. I know EoF wasn't the best but, 6 months. Half a year. I had to delete more loot than use it

That's another tricky topic. Fomo can be bad, but also, the need an incentive for people to play. Edit: weird downvotes lol. Never said in this comment what I think the incentive should be. Just pointed out one tactic Bungie is using. Maybe some will read on to comments made hours ago, maybe not.

        • So what's the alternative, have a hundred weapons in the current loot pool? It's not the end of the world if you missed any of this loot. Mint? You missed it's prime. There's a current arc rocket pulse. There's the exotic strand booger pulse. Yeartide Apex? Use mida mini. The lustrous set? Meh. Trivial to get restoration. Obsession with loot is entirely on the player, not the devs. I don't care about loot, I'm still having fun. Seems like the loot vacuum players are not. One of us is playing the game incorrectly it seems.

          • Im not usually one to praise bungie. But fomo isn't really much of a thing with seasonal events anymore. Unless you're unable to play for the entire 3 weeks. It's literally showering us with gear atm. I had god rolls of everything , including gizmo weft, within the first week.

          • I think Bungle have made it abundantly clear that they don't care how much they hurt D2 since the players that are left have indicated they either like it it are prepared to take it.

Agree but bungie and the fan boys that support them or dont care aslong as they are happy will disagree with you Bungie does not learn from the past since they made this mistake before with warmind mods and well mods fomo which caused a backlash with the community back then mainly because the same thing now ,streamer or freind says try this build with this armor setup but you cannot try the build for months because of fomo mods If bungie is having to go back to fomo it shows the games on its last legs and bungie have ran out of content

            • Baking in FOMO to almost every aspect of the game is its ultimate downfall even Bungie themselves realise they can't obtain new players because half the game is missing. Their future games are forever marred by content vaulting, why should anyone buy Marathon if over half of it could disappear in 2 years time? I expect layoffs this year and Bungie winding down either to be completely axed or turned into another sony support studio. The "multi-year" roadmap they've been holding out on either doesn't exist and they are just spewing hot air or it'll be the most whelming thing ever. Watching them squirm trying to convince people to buy into another year of Destiny 2 will be interesting because the only things that could are wholly unrealistic for Bungie. Just enjoy what's left of D2 while you can because I don't think it has much left in it tbh. Bungie as a company is just done. finto. finished.
