Hello,
I’m trying to link my Xbox account to my existing Bungie.net profile but the process consistently fails with an authentication error.
My Bungie account was originally created years ago using my PlayStation login. I can still log into Bungie.net normally using my PlayStation credentials.
When I try to link my Xbox account, the following happens:
1. I log into Bungie.net using my PlayStation account.
2. I go to Settings → Accounts & Linking → Link Xbox Account.
3. I sign into my Microsoft/Xbox account successfully.
4. Bungie asks me to confirm my Xbox gamertag.
5. After confirming the gamertag, I receive the error:
“Authentication Error – An unexpected error occurred while communicating with your selected authentication provider.”
I have tried the following troubleshooting steps multiple times:
• Different browsers (Firefox, Edge, Chrome)
• iPhone and PC
• Incognito/private browsing
• Signing in with Xbox first and linking PlayStation afterward
• Clearing cookies and browser sessions
The error always occurs at the same step after entering the gamertag.
My Bungie display name is the same as my Xbox gamertag and I would like to keep using this account across platforms.
I’m planning to play Marathon on Xbox and would like to link my Xbox account to my existing Bungie profile before l buy.
Could someone please help check whether there is a stuck or incomplete Xbox platform link on my Bungie profile? I’ve been trying all week and it’s driving me crazy.
Thanks very much for any help.

3 RepliesHi there, Thank you for reaching out. That “Authentication Error – An unexpected error occurred while communicating with your selected authentication provider” message usually means the sign‑in handoff between Bungie.net and Microsoft is failing somewhere in the browser session, rather than a problem with your Bungie.net profile itself. Please try the following steps in order: Fully sign out everywhere Sign out of Bungie.net, then also sign out of xbox.com and account.microsoft.com in your browser. Close all tabs for Bungie, Xbox, and Microsoft. Retry in a private/incognito window Open a private/incognito window in your browser. Go to https://www.bungie.net, sign in with your PlayStation account. Go to Settings → Accounts & Linking → Link Xbox Account and follow the prompts to sign into your Microsoft/Xbox account again. Try a different browser/device and check extensions A different browser (Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Safari, etc.). If possible, a different device (another PC or a mobile browser). Temporarily disable any ad‑blockers, VPNs, or privacy/security extensions for Bungie.net and Microsoft/Xbox sites, as these can sometimes block the communication needed to complete the link. Make sure your browser is allowing cookies for Bungie.net and Microsoft/Xbox sign‑in pages. Double‑check the Microsoft account When the Microsoft sign‑in window appears, confirm it’s the exact account/gamertag you’re expecting to link (if you have multiple Microsoft/Xbox accounts, it’s easy to end up logged into the wrong one in the background).
