It ain’t what it used to be…

  • CGI Reliance has ruined the art of cinematography. Whilst also improving it, it's still heavily vested on and costly. They don't make em like they used to.

The industry is dead because of Covid and streaming services taking traditional studios’ lunch money. Not to mention the streaming services are now following the social media model of pushing attention over everything else. They don’t care about making good movies and shows, they just want you to keep subscribed for another month. They even produce ‘second screen content’ that’s designed to be watched in between looking at your phone. All this drives the average quality of content down. There will still be things that people care about and put effort into, and that is good, but what was once average is now bad, and what was once bad is now downright awful. Apparently there’s a new Meet the Parents AND a Meet the -blam!- film coming out, and a new Shrek, and a lot more video game movies, so we are definitely not doing well overall. Having said that: Nosferatu was amazing So was 28 Years Later (haven’t seen part 2) Alien: Romulus was a pretty good attempt at pivoting the franchise towards a teen audience. Haven’t seen Bugonia yet but that looks like fun. As for upcoming films there’s a new Evil Dead that I’ll be looking forward to, and I’ll probably catch the new Spider-Man and Masters of the Universe films but I’m not expecting much from either of them. But I’m confident there’ll be something good in amongst the drek. So long as Wes Anderson is still making movies there’ll at least be something visually interesting on the horizon.

    • It is but it's also because people don't go to theaters to see originals anymore. Back in the day you could make a original and people would check it out. Now it's only super hero movies or remakes that bring people out.

        • How so? There’s plenty of fantastic movies these days, even very recently.

          • You're just objectively correct, not saying that there's no good movies there's just significantly less of them. Just going through the box office for 2025 and man there was a lot of bad....

            • Saw Hail Mary last night. First time going out to a movie in years. It wasn’t the best movie, not my favorite movie, it was just a good movie worth getting out of the house to see. Hollywood used to make more of these. They need to make more like it.

              • Preferences are cyclical and ever changing... Nostalgia and early exposure create bias on quality... And ane easy out for companies is to reintroduce old things as new to minimize cost on all fronts....

              • I’m not sure I concur… while I agree that a lot of movies from the massive studios have been complete and total letdowns there’s a lot more to film than just those. However one place where I completely agree is in the CGI department since a lot of studios are using Unreal Engine, which just isn’t built for photo realism and everything that comes out of it looks very video gamey

                • I feel like I could agree, but I wonder how much of this feeling comes from survivorship bias.

                  • I can't say I agree. This is a common thing people feel across a lot of media, but most of the time I find that the problem is always just that they're not branching out enough. Granted, I've never been a huge movie nerd, so I'm not as up to date on it, but I'd say most of my favorite movies are actually at least somewhat newer. That said, I have dropped off of watching new movies these past couple years, but it's not because of the quality of the media, but some dumb life junk. The trailers I see still look good, though.
