I have heard about some law concerning this not too long ago, however I haven't heard of it since and I still see drivers with animals in vehicles with no leash or belt. Sometimes even with the animal on their lap while driving.
I'm bringing this up because I recently seen someone upload a picture on Facebook with their friend driving a car, while holding a cat with one of her hands. The title was "Who needs a cat carrier? lol" as to make it seem like it was a good thing. I on the other hand, seen it to be very dangerous. Animals, unlike humans, don't understand the risk of driving a vehicle or something as simple as crawling under the drivers feet can put them off the road.
Not only will tying the animal down allow the driver and the people in the car to be more safe, but also the animal itself. If you got into an accident with a pet aboard, that animal can easily go out the windshield and hurt themselves quite severely.
So, what's your guys thoughts on this? Do you drive with animals aboard? Do you see it as harmless or an accident waiting to happen? Personally, I think this is even worse than talking on a cell phone while driving and possibly as bad as texting while driving.

My dogs sit on the car seats with their leash/collar tied to the headrest. It's not ideal but they are ok like that, when they were small enough to go in the dog cage in the car they would howl and shit everywhere D: The like sitting next to people and getting fussed as they go for a ride.
-
It really depends, seeing those seatbelts for pets looks very uncomfortable for them.
-
I've never put my dog in a seat belt. She would squirm around too much and probably end up hurting herself that way.

Edited by Bandi: 11/12/2013 1:36:11 AMIf my dog doesn't want to get thrown out the front window then he will sit his ass down in the seat Should it a law? Hell no it shouldn't be a law for a pet to have a seat belt of some sort It should be a law to prevent them from interfering with your driving though, like purposefully letting them sit in your lap or dwell in the driver side foot well, especially if you're driving stick

It's horrible when you see people driving around in pick-up trucks with their dogs in the back.
-
It'd be a lot of trouble. I say if people want to they can, but not make it a law.
-
I drive with my dogs free in my car, never had problems. But best be sure, if someone hit me and caused an accident while I'm transporting my dogs somewhere, I would be forced to beat them profusely.

Edited by BADMAGIK: 11/11/2013 9:12:09 PMThere is a law that requires animals to be secured by a leash inside the vehicle to prevent the animal from jumping out. Most people simply ignore the law.........until a peace officer decides to enforce it.

Oh thank god, I thought she was actually back.
-
Sure it's safer for everyone.
-
My dog has a thing that goes into the seat belt thing and connects to his collar so he can't move around too much but most of the time we don't use it because he is pretty good when in the car.
-
But watching the dog fall down whenever we stop is funny, though.

Edited by ZeroSuitAlpha: 11/11/2013 8:46:04 PMDepends on the dog, you shouldn't need to go buy a baby-seat and belt for a small dog like a Pomeranian for them to be in the car. Big dogs it might make sense with so they don't drool out the window then get slammed into the glovebox if you suddenly stop.
-
Yes, because animals doing people things is hilarious and should be required by law.
-
I cant tell you how many times I told my mother that we should get a specialized "leash" (its a vest) that attaches to the seat belt but she is convinced he will be fine.
-
My dog rides without and stays on the passenger side, head out window. He is happiest there.

People should tie down their pet in some way if they really care for their animal. Without proper restraint a simple 'fender bender' could severely injure the pet. This is really up to the owner, but if they value the well being if their pet as much as they say they do I don't see why they would be against restraining it in some way shape or form while its in a vehicle.
-
I don't see why not.
-
I'd support it.
-
Like this? Yes.
-
Depends on the individual animal. I think most dogs are good, cats will definitely wander around(been there, done that).

Edited by Love Sosa: 1/16/2013 7:10:29 PMOur dog gets a seat belt when we drive with him so he doesn't try and escape and distract the driver We don't have a seatbelt so it will surivive the crash (as most likely it will be inujured severly so you would put it down), but so it doesn't -blam!- around and cause the driver to crash.

I see no reason why animals need to be seat belted in a vehicle It's not uncommon in the south US for dogs to ride in the back of pick up trucks loose. Not many dogs go flying off the back of the truck. But then again they do make dog restraints for those situations so maybe those dogs are properly secured in the back.

I don't have a seatbelt for my dog. It may be a good idea though....
