And I'm kind of nervous.
Any tips for me on my new journey?

Load up on your classes now. Take the hard stuff trust me, it'll all be worth it when your senior year rolls around and you only have a couple classes a semester. Secondly, pick your friends well. But remember not to make decisions based on what others think. After High School you won't see 90% of them. Extra-curriculars are a nice addition if you find something that interests you pursue it.

It's almost impossible to tell who will turn into a trouble-maker at the start of what you call high school, so don't bother trying to pick them out so that you can avoid them. I was lucky that I made friends with a group of people that generally had their nose to the grindstone a lot for school and didn't do anything stupid. I saw some good friends turn bad when they started hanging around deviants, but like I said, it's difficult to identify them early on, so the only way you can avoid them is by avoiding them once you notice them gradually turning to the dark side before they pull you in XD TL;DR Everyone has the potential to be an idiot, even you. It's all down to who you hang around with.

You start school in January?

Edited by Love Sosa: 1/20/2013 4:25:31 PMBe social, make a diverse friend group from jocks to gamers. Study and get good grades. Play football or join other sports you are interested in.

choose good company, that's all you have to do.

Schoolwork aside, think very carefully about who you befriend and whether or not they will end up being an absolute jerk. I know a guy who is such an asshat that he left two of my good friends alone in his own house with my other friend, drunk out of his mind and sick as hell, just so he could go to the park and get high. Don't associate with those kinds of people and you'll be golden. Oh, and develop a good work ethic. Study, do a thorough job on homework, focus on assignments... it's a little hypocritical of myself to suggest that, BUT GET THAT MINDSET DOWN AS EARLY AS POSSIBLE; you'll save yourself a lot of headaches and possibly even money later on.

As a fellow Kiwi who has just left High School for Uni, I tend to agree with most of the points made here. Get into extracurricular activities! When you know you have true friends, don't let petty arguments break these friendships. Be confident, bullies don't bother people who look like they don't care. Plus teachers like confident students. Don't get lazy about your work, year 9 and 10 require more work than year 7 and 8, and it won't get easier, so if you don't pay attention in these years, learning for NCEA will be tough. Lastly, don't get in to smoking weed or tobacco, it's become far more common recently, when all it does is cost you money and ruin your health. Really not cool.

Avoid the stupid drama.
-
Don't get bogged down in drama. If it looks like trouble, it probably is.
-
don't procrastinate for the love of god and all that is good and holy do not procrastinate
-
Join a club, a sport, or any extracurricular activity. Do your homework, and don't be too nervous. Just talk to people.
-
Wait.. high school? How old are you op?
-
1. Don't flunk your classes..ever. If you pass all them, your last year of high school will be easy-breezy. 2. Join a club or something. Make friends, so you have somewhere to hang at lunch. 3. What comes around, goes around. Don't be dick. And have more friends then enemies. 4. For the love of science, don't get depressed when your girlfriend/boyfriend dumps you. It'll happen. Move on.
-
Do something extra-curricular and pass your classes.
-
Don't wear pants.

Truthfully OP there are some times in life you can't be yourself, you will know what times it is. You also just have to be a good person, hang out with the right kind of people.

Edited by OaklandPaintbalr: 1/20/2013 7:54:11 AMBe social. Make friends, and make friends fast. Be nice to everyone you meet, especially as an underclassman. You never know which girls will be hot in 3 years.
-
I'm assuming your high schools start at Grade 10? Because otherwise you're waaaay too young to be on B.net
-
Where are you that the school year starts in late January?
-
Be nice to everyone, even if they are jerks. Make friends with as many people as you can so if your good friends are sick or you cant find anyone in the morning you can just talk to other friends for the day. Start to have a better working habit if possible it will help you in college or university. Ie not doing work the day before, studying, listening in class, organizing your books etc. Listen in class Try to get 80% and up
-
You're young. Be friendly and nice. Don't be an ass or you'll get beat up and people will hate you.
-
Get involved deeply in activities you enjoy. Not only will it help you form lasting friendships, but it is something that will look great on college applications. I got involved in theater construction and sound my junior year. Ended up doing it all through college. Met some great people, including my future best man. It will simply help you keep your sanity some days when things get overwhelming. Also, don't take things too seriously. A lot of people get caught up, believing that high school is going to be the prime of your life. This is far from the truth. Life keeps getting better and better as long as you keep pushing yourself. Don't get caught up in "now or never" scenarios.

Get good grades?
