The free version will let you initiate scans, and will catch almost anything. Combofix is a bit more powerful, but it has the potential to mess up your system if you don't know what you're doing. malwarebytes.org ... I can't link a .org, I guess. I use Norton, but I hear MalwareBytes is pretty good if you want one that's free.

Avast and AVG are great. Heard Microsoft Security Essentials is also pretty good. I've been using AVG for years, but recently went with Avast on my new PC.
