Man goes shopping with rifle at J.C. Penny
Cell phone images of a Utah man who went shopping with a rifle slung over his shoulder and a Glock 19c on his hip have gone viral on the internet, with some saluting his boldness and others questioning the wisdom of his decision. An Ogden woman snapped a few photos of a man standing inside a J.C. Penny on Wednsday nothing that even for a firearm-friendly state like Utah, it was out of the ordinary. "I've seen someone carrying on their hip or leg, but I have never seen anyone openly carrying an assault rifle," she said.
This might be an example of "just because you can, doesn't mean you should." Yes what he did was legal, but walking around with a rifle can scare people, especially in the era of mass shootings (when malls can be a target). People around him may also have been wary of accidental discharges, remember that five people were injured at gun shows on "gun appreciation day."

  • There have been groups of guys dressed in militia wear walking around cities carrying AR15s to show the public that "reasonable people can responsibly own those types of weapons." They caused panic and overwhelmed the police department with calls from scared residents. Idiots like this give the gun control advocates the best PR they could ask for. All you have to do is mention gun control and redneck will run around town with assault rifles scaring the bejesus out of people and the NRA will publish ads about the presidents daughters.

      • Soo much paranoia. I mean do you guys really feel that unsafe walking outside without a gun? I know this is a kind of protest thing but still. Does the average American feel unsfae to leave their houses in the day time without some sort of weapon?

        • I don't care, though I was really hoping this was a story from Virginia where a umbrella was mistaken as an AK 47. My brother who lives in Virginia was telling em about it, said they locked down the entire mall and everything. Sounded pretty hilarious.

          • Fine by me. I carry two guns on me when ever I go out alone or with family. Sometimes they may stick out and people will clearly see it, but not freak out one little bit. One person loved that they saw a young person carry. I have a permit and proper training to do this, HUGE difference between me and the morons who make argument of "gunz are badz" come to light.

            • That's absurd. When you're making the people around you uncomfortable, perhaps you're the one in the wrong.

              • Perhaps America does need guns. Without wanting to start a massive argument, when loads of people have guns there'll be people who'll use them to do bad. Sod all that stuff about criminals using black market guns. There's a black market over here too but the don't have mass shootings and our gun crime rate is extremely low. If you ask me legal guns = more gun crime.

                • I see people with rifles slung and pistols on their hip relatively frequently. It's about as common as seeing... let's see, what would be something with a similar frequency? I see more hats than guns, but more guns than watch fobs, certainly more guns than monocles. Still trying to think of a good comparison based on likelihood of seeing it.... Less guns than bald heads, more guns than canes. I don't know. I can't come up with an accessory, tool, carry item that has a close commonality to firearms, but of the things that I've named, none of them (including the firearms) tend to get more than a passing glance or sometimes an appreciative nod (if the observer happens to like what they see). Seeing a firearm in public doesn't cause a panic, outburst or clamor around here.
