Legislation to enable same-sex marriages to take place in England and Wales has been published.
Culture Secretary Maria Miller told BBC Radio 4: "We feel that marriage is a good thing and we should be supporting more couples to marry."
The bill has divided Conservatives, with former Defence Secretary Liam Fox recently describing it as "ill thought through and constitutionally wrong".
Conservative MPs will get a free vote on the legislation when it is debated in the Commons on Tuesday 5 February, meaning they will face no repercussions if they decide to defy government policy.
More than 100 Tory MPs are thought to be against the idea, but the bill is likely to pass through the Commons with the support of Labour and Liberal Democrat MPs.
"We are trying to make sure that there are the protections there for churches who feel that this isn't appropriate for their particular beliefs," she told BBC Radio 4's Today programme.
So this bill let's ghey people marry, but doesn't force churches who don't want to let them marry to marry a ghey couple?
I see no drawbacks to this and has made me respect David Cameron a bit more

Do what ever you want, just dont expect me to support it.

Edited by Capiton Render: 1/28/2013 5:07:18 PMWat england has a constitootion? I figured it was just a mad queen with a bunch of powdered wigs chasing her around to fill her every beck and command.
-
It always has been legal in my eyes, just like cannabis.
-
I don't get this :S Same sex marriage has been legal in England for some time now...
-
Good, they are people too. You can't deny them rights because they have a different way of life.

Edited by superaz Roberts: 1/27/2013 5:03:52 PMOne of the few things this government is doing right, I still have no respect for them though... EDIT: The government that is, plenty of respect for all the gay people out there.
-
Well, this is awesome!
-
Fair enough, no reason why they shouldn't be allowed to get married.
-
Edited by Ichthyosaur: 1/27/2013 11:15:49 AMIf you ask me, there is no reason against same sex marriage that can't be torn to pieces in seconds I have gained even more respect for the country I love, even if we are ruled by Tory toffs
-
lol queers getting married.
-
Those who disagree with Gay rights are no different then those who disagree with giving black people rights. Those people like this should quite frankly be sterilized so that they don't pass their stupidity. Churches shouldn't be forced to marry a Gay couple though. Or any couple for that matter. If they want they can say, lol, screw you! And not marry you. However they should still get the right to marry, anyone who disagrees is an idiot.

I don't see why this hasn't been legal since the beginning of time. Seriously, for the detractors, how does 2 gay people getting married affect your "straight" relationship? How exactly would 2 gay people getting hitched destroy the life you've built with your significant other? For those who say; "It's just wrong" or some other bullshit: If you truly believe that gay marriage is wrong, then... don't do it? It won't affect you at all if 2 gays people get married, so why should you be able to force your moral code on someone else? Why are your views and moral opinions more important than what they believe is right and just, and a protected constitutional right? Answer: You have no ground to stand on. Your views revolve around ignorant, bigoted, hatred of anything that is different than you. You can have those views, but please, by the Gods I worship, keep them in your own inbred thoughts.
-
I believe Churches shouldn't have to preform ceremonies for gay people, but that doesn't mean they can't get married.

Edited by Dredd: 1/26/2013 12:41:29 AMHopefully it doesn't pass. The UK is the only real country left in Europe.
-
Edited by Quantum: 1/27/2013 12:43:56 AMI'm still waiting for the New Zealand bill to get through all the committees. It should pass by a reasonable margin with a conscious vote. Good for the UK.
-
Shit, man. So much stupid in these comments...
-
Edited by Quantum Echo: 1/26/2013 3:54:14 PM>constitutionally wrong >>>>>constitutionally wrong There was a constitution? Even if there was anything constitutional about it, same-sex-marriages wouldn't be unconstitutional. Plus, I like how you say it makes you like David Cameron a little more, because I'm wondering how much more? You and I both know he's a bad leader still, right?
-
'England Government' what brand of mincer did you put the English language through to get that phrase? anyway, i hope this goes through; it's ridiculous how long the debate has been going on for.
-
I thought the legalization excluded Church of England churches (which I thought was just stupid), if they're now included, this is definitely a step in the right direction.
-
Hopefully this will make us follow suit.
-
That feel when you live in Washington state and your state has already legalized gay marriage. feelscivilized.jpg

I am so moving to England.
-
Way to go England. If only we could get people to think somewhat sensibly here.
-
Good for them.
-
Good for England, always makes me happy to see news like this.
