World War 2 Tech! (#2 The Spitfire)

What some would call the plane that saved Britain, the Super Marine Spitfire fighter was Britain's go to fighter during World War 2. It was the most mass produced fighter for Britain and the only one that was continuously produced during the war. The spitfire served as a high altitude interceptor, a reconnaissance plane, a trainer and a carrier based fighter. It flew on all fronts during the war and performed exceptionally in the roles it was given. The spitfire during the battle of Britain had a lower attrition rate and a much higher win ratio when compared to the Hawker Hurricanes which were more numerous at the time. The public saw the spitfire as "the" RAF fighter. Its elliptical wing shape allowed it to have more air over its surface making its turning capacity significantly better than the Luftwaffes ME-109, which was its main adversary over the skies of Britain. Overall it was simply more maneuverable and the ME-109 suffered from being unable to turn with it making it an easy target. As the battle went on the Luftwaffe was eventually worn down to the point where it could only raid during night time and thus effectively ending what was the battle of Britain. The blitz however (London bombings) continued until the end of the war. The legend of the Spitfire still lives on today with more than 80 still operational and numerous memorials to it around Britain. It defeated the Luftwaffe over Britain and continued on till the end of the war on all fronts, it was a symbol of the RAF, its skill and bravery. The picture above is a squadron of Super Marine Spitfire LF MK 12's of 41st Squadron in 1944. The Spitfire would continue to be upgraded and produced throughout the war. If you have a fact or technology you would like to see featured on my little daily post here please tell me! Thank you for reading and as always if you like what you see feel free to follow me, i post these daily!

  • Spitfire's gained all the glory but the Hurricanes bared the weight of the battle of Britain on their shoulders. Spitfire's where also the 1st aircraft to do a loop and get behind the enemy which made it a powerful contender.

      • Ah (: now it works. For some reason the comment button wasn't popping up. My grandfather was a tank driver in WWII for the British forces, one of the first in Berlin. They were given orders to try and stop the russians/ get to Hitler before the russians got him. Many of his school friends perished throughout the war, as well as all of his siblings. His sister died in the blitz, as well as his mother. He told me a story of how he was driving a tank through the countryside. They were advancing on the final stretch towards Berlin when they got pinned down by German forces. He said that all the tanks around him were being shot and blown up, with many of his friends jumping out on fire. He said that at the last possible moment several spitfires in the area descended "like angels from the sky" and gave him enough cover for him and a few others to get out alive. Just thought I'd share.
