I've been seeing a lot of crap around here in people claiming to be first-hand witnesses of paranormal activity like UFO's on demons flocking about. If you're one of those people, I implore you to look at the red dot in the above picture. Focus on it really carefully. For most people, the blue circle will seem to vanish as long as they keep looking at the dot.
Why is this? Because the human eye has a very limited span of view, and most of what you think you can see in your field of vision is actually completely fabricated by your brain based off your 'sight history' for lack of better terms. As long as you focus on that dot, the eye can't actually see hardly anything except what is within a few degrees of that dot, and the brain has to 'fill-in' the rest based on what it thinks might be there (in this case, a bunch of white). This has some scary implecations, because it means that if you believe you can see something strongly enough (like, I don't know, ghosts and demons) your brain will make you see things that aren't even really there.
And it's not just sight, every human sense, be it sound, feeling and even memory, is vunrable to the same effect, as anytime you are in a sleep deprived state or in 'shut down' small, mundane events are capable of triggering complicated hallucinations that may seem 100% real to an affected person who is not aware of this fact. Memory is one of the scariest things to be affected by this, as someone who is not self-questioning can be implanted with all kinds of memories and recollections through simple relaxed suggestion (ever seen a session where someones memory of being abducted are 'extracted'? This is what that really is).
TL;DR Anecdotal evidence is the most unreliable form of evidence there is, hell human brains can be fooled just by being shown repeating patterns. Don't waste your time or make yourself look like an idiot over believing in stuff like ufos or demons until actual physical evidence is presented. The phrase 'seeing is believeing' is flat-out false.
/rant I spend way too much time on.
(For the record I don't actually care if someone believes in that stuff, since if they truely do then there's nothing that will change that, especially not some internet post. I just think you guys might find this little-known kernel of info to be interesting).

If ghosts aren't real, how do you explain Casper?
-
Ghosts are real!
-
Pretty interesting OP.
-
Freaky shit.
-
Funny that OP just proved that Tulpas exist.
-
I', 90% sure this thread is literally a copy and paste of a much older one.
-
I've seen them, I believe in them. They are here.
-
You need to watch some Ancient Aliens on the History channel. The History Channel - Where the truth, is history

Fortunately I don't have this problem because I wear glasses.
-
so if my brain can trick me into believing something's there when it isn't, when should i trust my senses and when should i not? answer me that one, science boy.
-
That's weird.

A friend of mine believes in ghosts because when he was FOUR YEARS OLD he says he saw one. When I tell him that when you are 4 you misinterpret all sorts of things and that really those memories are so old he shouldn't be able to trust them he always answers; "IT WAS A GHOST, STEVEN!" Then he runs off in a grump.

Edited by BADMAGIK: 1/29/2013 5:23:54 PMOnce again; Believing in God and hell is faith. An all powerful God who created the universe and all life within it, would also have the power to conceal his existence. The human mind cannot comprehend EVER in this form the understanding of his existence until it is your time to journey to the next life.

That circle just shimmered a little for me. Anyhow, I reject your reality and substitute my own.

This is very related.

>OP says demons and ghosts are bunk >doesn't say aliens are bunk
-
if ghosts/demons aren't real, then can you explain the pots and books that flew at my family and bruised them? or why no matter how hard me or the rest of my family tried to walk up the stairs, they flat out couldn't? it was almost like trying to walk through a brick wall.
-
So what about if you focused on something, rather than saw something out of the corner of their eye, as many people claim?
-
Ok, you have a good point. I'll stop my post there...
-
I have a friend who claims she saw a ghost. I will be showing her this.
-
For most people, the blue circle will seem to vanish as long as they keep looking at the dot.
For most people, anyways. I'm not trying to prove or disprove anything, but just because you haven't seen it doesn't mean others haven't either, whether it truly was real or not.

I feel like people who have experienced LSD have a better sense of how distorted one's perceptions can be.
-
All I can think of when reading your title.
-
You are correct. Though I believe that many accounts of demons and ghosts are actually from the hallucinations during sleep paralysis.
-
Then how do we see things moving in our periphery without turning to see it? That alone totally debunks your idea of brains guessing what's there.
