World War 2 Tech! (#4 The Sturmgewehr!)

I have a short one for you guys today i apologize i am quite tired. I have something good planned for tomorrow though so stay tuned! Did you know, that the Germans created and produced the very first assault rifle? It was called the STG 44 or MP44 (Allies). It was in service from Late September 1943 to the end of the war in 1945, while its prototypes fought in limited availability from 1942. Its full name is the Sturmgewehr 44, which literally translates to assault or "storm" rifle which now all modern assault rifles are named from. It sported a 30 round magazine that fired 7.9mm bullets at 550-600 rounds a minute. It also had adjustable forward iron sights and very rarely had optics that could be fixed to it, it also had an attachment that added a bent barrel for firing around corners, but it wasn't very prominent or effective. The STG 44 project was almost scrapped by Hitler who did not like it at first, but after firing it himself he ordered it into production and gave it its name for propaganda purposes. More than 300,000 were produced and most given to grenadier divisions which were filled with rather inexperienced men but had excellent equipment. It saw action in the west and east, and was used until the war ended. However as with most German superior German designs it was to little to late, much like the rocket programs and jet fighters, it instead changed the future not of the third Reich but the modern world. Today the STG's legacy lives on in literally all assault rifles, the 30 round magazine is still used in modern assault rifles, and the famous AK-47 is modeled off it. As with most German tech it has shaped the battlefields of the cold war and still shapes it today. Picture- A German soldier takes aim with his STG 44 somewhere in Europe... Thank you for reading and as always if you like this stuff follow me, i post them daily!

It wasn't the first assault rifle, it was the first mass produced one. That title belongs to the Fedorov Avtomat, a World War I Russian automatic rifle. The Mondragón rifle was one of, if not the first automatic rifles (not assault, though) and was built in 1887. But still, the StG 44 is an amazing rifle; I love it. Edit: I was wrong. German engineering kicks too much ass to be second.
