Death is usually something I am completely apathetic towards because most scenarios I imagine my self dying in are completely out of my control. And there are many preventable deaths I see on the news that most people would find to be somber but I take it in as every day life. I feel that in the event that there is a preventable death, not everyone will take the precautions to prevent them later on in the future, and I can't control what other people do, so I don't worry about it. And when there is a death maybe near me, that I am unaffected by simply because I don't know the person, it is sad to know someone has died but I forget easily and soon. If you're still reading I have a friend who I was talking with last night and she told me that someone's car crashed into a tree in front of her friend's neighborhood. And the texts she sent me pretty much implied she was really depressed by it. I asked her if she was affiliated with the person who died, she told me no. I asked her if she witnessed the accident and was traumatized from it, she told me no. So beyond those two reasons for being depressed about the death, I don't understand at all. Help me understand. Have any of you ever had to psychologically deal with a death that was almost completely unrelated to you?

  • Let me elaborate a little bit more though. I have never been just utterly devastated by the death of someone I never knew. I still get sad every time I see videos of 9/11, but that doesn't mean that I'm psychologically disturbed by it like some of the people who were first hand witnesses of it. I've never really been that sad about anyone's death, mostly because I haven't really had anyone very close to me die. A kid at my school drove into a tree and died last year. Sure I felt very sad but I didn't know him so I got over it quickly.
