All the sudden you're in the distant past. You're in the Roman Coliseum, being pushed towards the arena to fight an experienced looking gladiator armed with a large sword and some simple armor. Their is no escape, you must fight and win or die. You are given two options on how you will be armed.
Option 1. A pointy trident, Small Barbed Dagger, a Net, and some shoulder armor.
Option 2. A regular sword, small shield, and a helmet (Your face and neck are exposed).
Which option do you pick before you're thrown in the arena? Why? Do you think you'll survive?

I'd take the dagger, so I can kill myself. HOW DO YOU LIKE ME NOW ROMAN PEOPLE!?

Edited by GT Stryker: 2/5/2013 3:23:29 AMI pick option one. Then I'll drop my weapons and request a hug. When we really hit it off, we'll go for dinner at some Italian restaurant. We'll go for a picnic at night, and when we finally look into each others eyes in the moonlight, when the moment seizes us, and when time seems to stand still, that is when I'll know. I'll know.

If anybody in here honestly believes that they could kill an experienced gladiator, a professional fighter, then they are insane. Gladiators spend all their time training and fighting for their life. Its part of their career. Think of it as going into a cage match with a professional MMA fighter. You're not going to last long. If i had to choose though, id go with option 1. I have range with the trident, the net to slow him down, and im lightly armored, so im able to move faster.
-
Option 2 because everyone else says it can't be done.
-
Anyone who picks option 2 is asking to die. Option 1 for me.

Edited by lVlzone: 2/6/2013 12:06:12 AMPeople don't seem to realize how heavy a sword and shield would be. With that being said, option 1. I'd prefer the mobility over the brute strength.
-
Being a history nerd, option one. Nets were extremely effective in the Gladiator fights, and I could use the trident like a spear. If worst comes to worst, I can blind him with my shoulder armor, net him, then stab em' to death. Due to his experience, option 2 would be suicide. It's safe to say that anyone armed with a sword is skilled in CQC combat, and thus I'd want to keep him as far away from me as possible. Quite easy with a trident.
-
Option 2. I know how to use a shield in a fight, I've seen Captain America.
-
The Net will cause a hassle. The Trident is essentially useless unless utilised in a stabbing motion, and the shoulder armor does not protect any crucial area of the body. Option 2 get.
-
Option 2. I know a few tricks with a shield and no, I didn't learn them from a video game.
-
Trident has reach, net can disarm or entangle him, dagger is an emergency weapon, and the shoulder armor protects an easy target.
-
Never underestimate a good net.
-
Option 1. Dem net disarms...
-
Option 1, have the reach advantage with the trident. One poke with that thing and you win, where as you can sustain a blow from a sword and survive/keep fighting.
-
Sword Sheild and Helm definatly.
-
Option 1 Trident in right hand, dagger in left.

Edited by ToastyWaffles: 2/5/2013 11:56:23 AMOption 1. I had the reach, but she had the flexibility...

net ftw
-
Probably option 1 for the trident for the distance factor. Being honest, I probably wouldn't stand a chance in hell against a trained, hardened gladiator in close quarters, so I'd want all the distance I could get.
-
What does the other guy have
-
A shield is probably the most effective form of protection from melee attacks. with a regular sword, you're good to go. Not much you can do with a trident and a small dagger.
-
Option 2. Shields FTW
-
Fun fact: it was rare for Gladiators to die in the arena, so I would put on a show to entertain the crowd and then get some ancient medical advice.
-
Assuming equal skill with both sets of weapons, and my opponent is equally as skilled, I would chose the first option. Range wins in most scenarios I've found. Plus the Net would (if it worked) would totally mess you up. If we are going with how good we are with said weapons in real life. I'd choose option 2, as sword and shield are my most proficient set of weapons there.
-
Option 1 I'd have a range advantage on him using a trident, I'd just have to fight defensively keep my distance and counter his attacks.
