Its only a matter of time before those barbaric Canadian hordes finish us off.

If not the USA, then the EU for sure. Other nations are picking up the pace quickly. Only look at BRICS to see that the USA's days as the dominent superpower are numbered. Alltogether elsewhere, Vast herds of raindeer move across Miles and miles of golden moss, Silently and very fast.

America isnt an empire, so no
-
Contrary to popular belief; USA =/= empire
-
For starters, the USA isn't an empire lol
-
Some of his similarities are sketchy at best, and subjective at worst. If the United States is following the model set by any other empire it would be the British one, especially their military model and their "informal empire."
-
No. I don't see the United States making deals with barbarian mercenaries that they cannot pay back. Most of our debt is to social security--thus, within America. Likewise, if you consider the Byzantine Empire to be Rome, I don't see radical Muslim Turks at our doorstep with cannons.
-
Absolutely not.
-
Subjective Americans are subjective. As an outsider, I can see America has, and still is, to a certain degree declining.

My response to that article.

exactly the same way

Did Rome get ruined by leftists?

Sounds like the writer is concerned that the country isn't conservative enough. We live in a very different world than the Romans. The US isn't the only civilized country around (like Rome was). We live in an interconnected world, and despite what you may think of the UN, even the idea of it it is a major achievement considering human history. The fact of the matter is the US as a state cannot fail. It wouldn't be allowed. You want proof; look at the Gulf War. If the countries of the world won't let Kuwait fall, you can be damned sure the US won't.

Edited by Vgnut: 2/6/2013 4:11:30 AMWhen politicians own private armies and routinely kill each other then there may be some validity to the comparison. And I'm only comparing it to the fall of the Republic. Comparing the fall of the Empire to the USA is just ridiculous to me.
-
That article was hilariously stupid. The only good point made is an over the top military budget, which is currently being cut down anyway. The USA isn't falling, kiddos. You aren't living in the end times, you aren't going to participate in WWIII. Time to grow up.

They are both republics? the similarities end there
-
Rome wishes they were as awesome as us.

1. Over-extended military: we do not "operate as an empire" and have foreign bases at the will of those countries. Our military is not at all over-extended, and the correct term, "forward deployment", is our current strategic objective. 2. All governments face corruption. They provide no proof that it is widespread or conspiratorial. 3. Immigrants don't assimilate? Have you ever been to southern Arizona or Texas? 4. Birth control: this is actually correct. Many view the 50+ million abortions in America in the past several decades to be largely responsible for the top-heavy social security program 5. Depends on your definition of "middle class", but they comprise of up to 2/3 of our population. Wrong again. 6. Correlation =/= causation, and it's important to note that their sports centered around death and slavery. 7. Correlation =/= causation. If tax rates do not rise but instead the federal budget is reallocated to provide more welfare, then there is no increased burden on taxpayers. The article offers no insight into how redistribution caused Rome's downfall. 8. Exporting "culture": Again, has nothing to do with Rome's downfall 9. Morality: holy shit, this is the biggest cause of correlation =/= causation. Seriously, this writer sucks. 10. Inflation: legitimate point, again lacking any evidence that the issue is out of hand. Also, fkn lol'd at the "wiki.answers.com" source for further reading. Seems legit, OP.

The US just needs Life Alert.
