The starmap is an image of all the visitors from a point of view above africa, and it is being projected several times onto the image. If you scroll down this page quickly, the points of light in the upper left look like the east coast down to Florida rotating into view. Lemme see if I can make something to show this.

I don't think there is anything special to the starmap at this point other than to show activity across the world.
