Has smartphones replaced the need for handheld consoles?

Games on the IOS like NFS Most Wanted, Dead Space, Infinity Blade, CoD Zombies, Moderncombat 4, Mass Effect and Dead Space are perfect examples to show the limit of what iPhones can do. Android phones are also just as capable. Who would of believed this is an iPhone game Proof console games can be played on mobile (down graded of course) Hell now iPhones and Androids can even be used as an emulator now too. But both the 3ds and Vita have been suffering from low sales. Does anyone here still actively game on handhelds (or would you if pokemon didn't exist)

  • Yes I game on handhelds, I play all I can on my 3ds when passing time away from home... smartphones will never surpass handhelds for the simple fact that they have no actual dedicated, professional, game developers that can make decent handheld games that last longer than 5 min without being a grind-fest.

    • Yeah, but I'd say it's the arcade-style games like Angry Birds and Temple Run that've made phones the more popular gaming platform. There's no involving storyline or universe in Pac-Man or Snake, and like them, mobile games boil gaming down to simple, addictive gameplay. Players go back to a level not to experience that epic moment again, but instead to beat a high score. Regardless, I'm glad mobile gaming is making its mark: it's bringing much-needed diversity to the industry and community.

      • It's hard to play "proper" games without physical buttons..... but I do carry a SNES and GBA emulator on my Android to play when I'm bored. They work for the most part, but the lack of buttons is the only thing that makes them less than ideal.

        • No. The games on smartphones are terrible quality. Vita and 3DS master race.

          • Not a chance. You can't play a real video game without actual buttons. I can't imagine how terrible CoD on a phone must be.

            • It's certainly getting close, but it's not quite there yet. I know I use my Nexus 4 and 7 paired with a PS3 controller to play shooters and such. It's fantastic.

              • You know, I'm always looking for good games to put on my iPhone but I can't find any which amuses me for more than a couple of minutes. However I know people who can play, for example Angry birds, for hours on end. Those people don't seem to be actual "gamers" though. When I buy a handheld, I usually buy it for one or two games. I bought the 3DS for Resident Evil Revelations, which was an amazing game and ran surprisingly well on the 3DS. Also, I don't miss any Pokemon games. So until smartphones offer gaming like such, I'll still be buying handhelds.

                • I would say no, not directly, because actual gamers are going to want a dedicated gaming device with specfic and reliable controls and more capability. What I think smart phones are doing is pulling gamers away from any console/PC in general. Having little games on your phone or tablet offer an avenue of even more convenience for the casual player. As such people that would buy and play console/PC games for something to do from time to time may not even bother since they can accomplish as much on a phone or tablet.

                • I have a Vita and a 3DS. The problem is that there's no -blam!-ing games. And please, don't toss Kid Icarus and Gravity Rush at me. They have no recent games. Argue the quality of smartphone games, most of it is shovelware designed to kill a few minutes while you drop a deuce, but emulation greatly expands the library of games. The only downside is the lack of physical buttons.

Only thing that holds back mobile phones is the lack of actual buttons. But you can connect a PS3 controller over Bluetooth,Xbox controllers over USB, and there are some custom controllers as well.

                    • Because smart phones aren't designed for gaming, I think they haven't replaced the handheld consoles yet.

                    • I don't actively game on handhelds, but I do casually play on my phone almost every day when I'm waiting for something or when I'm just bored and about to go to bed.
