Yeah, so Russia is alarmed because of that asteroid which passed by today and because a meteor crashed into Russia yesterday. There's also the Tunguska Event when a meteor blew up in midair over Russia in 1908.
I support this, an anti-asteroid system is the first step to having orbital defense grids and militarized spaceships against hostile extra-terrestrial forces.
Any thoughts?
Perhaps not militarized spaceships, but orbital defenses and programs very similar (almost exactly) to drop ship troopers (like in Spaceship Troopers) are a reality. The main goal of an anti-asteroid program would likely be a spaceship which would simply latch on and push it out of the way, rather than using ICBM's to blow it up. Doing that results in a whole bunch of meteoroids, and if it's an ELE (Extinction Level Event) then chances are the ICBM wouldn't be able to have enough power to blow it into small enough pieces to be destroyed in orbit. Not to mention the issues with radiation in upper atmosphere, and the EMP blast's damage to orbital satellites.
