I think we were all a little shocked to hear that Destiny is indeed meant to only function while connected to the internet. Many have probably asked why they would be so bold as to competely alienate any who might not have acess to the internet. But, don't get me wrong, I'm not complaining or asking them to change anything, no, I simply want to brainstorm with you guys some things that might have influenced their decision.
They Be Doin' It for the Gold
Arrr. Everyone at Bungie, and probably plenty that aren't employed there, have spent countless hours and will spend countless more, perfecting this game, so naturally they would want to cut back on people pirating the game. However, to be totally honest, I don't think this is the real reason they chose to do always online; I believe it to be more of a benign side-effect. (Did you just read that whole thing with a pirate accent?)
It's a Console Thing
You understand. Unlike many laptops, consoles tend to stay connected to the internet. I don't think I've unhooked my Xbox from the internet since I got it two years ago. I don't think many people have reason to move there Xbox or take it somewhere they wont have internet access, so Destiny being on consoles (especially if it ends up only being on consoles) may just mean this game could be inherently online without much fallout.
We Can't All Be Time Traveling Aliens
It would be quite Vexing. I don't know about you guys, but I'd be quite annoyed at the idea of anyone being able to set their system clock forward to manipulate the (supposed) economy. So many games have tried to do in-game economies, and so many have been broken by system clock manipulation; my friends always have all the Bells and whistles, and I, adhering to standards, am stuck with nothing. This, like piracy is probably not a prime argument, but a reason none the less.
S-s-s-social to the Bone
This reason, I think, is a Thoroly, good one. Always having an internet connection when playing Destiny probably wont have much of an effect on most of us (It certainly doesn't affect me any). But, I'm sure there are plenty of individuals without internet that already feel Bungie has turned on them (or at least they will, next time they go to the library). I don't think that it really alienates many would otherwise be able to enjoy the game. It seems to be a social game at it's core, and anyone who doesn't already have an internet connection wouldn't really be able to enjoy the game anyway. To play this game without a connection, would most likely not be very fun. Bungie, really, is just saving people from paying for something that they aren't going to enjoy: a sad empty experience, void of other players. This, again, is probably the fundamental justification for Bungie's actions.
So, what do you think? Is their decision justified? Are there other reasons I didn't think about or didn't include? Let's get discussionating!
