Calvary Baptist Academy will have dozens fewer students this morning when teachers call roll after school officials suspended several for participating in a series of YouTube videos.
About 40 students between eighth and 12th grade were suspended Wednesday for their part in one of three videos with students performing the “Harlem Shake.” The videos feature members of the school’s baseball and wrestling teams, as well as a high school English class. School officials say the video is “vulgar” because of the students’ attire and gyrations.
“This wasn’t a knee-jerk decision,” assistant principal Kevin Guerrero said. “Myself and the principal as well as the superintendent began meeting yesterday to discuss the videos and any action we should take.”
From those meetings, Guerrero said officials determined the videos violated the school’s police regarding the use of social networks and the negative image such videos could have on the school, as well as Calvary Baptist Church.
Guerrero declined to say how long the students would be suspended but said school officials were fair and consistent in punishment.
“All of these kids are really good kids that made a bad decision,” Guerrero said. “Unfortunately, what they did was very inappropriate, and it’s a no-win situation for all of us.”
As of Wednesday night, the videos saw more than 4,000 views and climbing. Calls to students for comment were not returned before press time.
Since the school’s decision, Guerrero said several parents expressed their displeasure with the suspension, but officials stand by the punishment.
“We understand some parents are upset, and I’ve spoken to several of them who say their child didn’t do as much as another and should have a lesser punishment,” Guerrero said. “That may be a valid point and I understand that, but we determined to stay consistent and hold each student accountable.”
Guerrero said his interest lies with protecting the church, and he hopes the suspension will stop other students from creating such videos.
“We have to do what’s in the best interest of the church, as well as the students,” he said. “It’s best to learn this lesson now while you’re still in high school than when they are out in the world trying to find a job.”
While I disagree with such a harsh and unnecessary punishment, why do every god damn person got to -blam!-ing do this -blam!-ing stupid fad. It's stupid, unoriginal, and got old FAST.
Guerrero said his interest lies with protecting the church, and he hopes the suspension will stop other students from creating such videos.
If only his interest lay in educating students. That's just creepy. This man sounds more like a cult leader than a principal.

ha deserves the little bastards right
School officials say the video is “vulgar” because of the students’ attire and gyrations.
LOL. Reminds of the time when my high school put on a formal dance (with all slow songs) and then forbade students from being within 18 inches of each other while dancing.
“This wasn’t a knee-jerk decision,” assistant principal Kevin Guerrero said.
Of course it is. The assistant principal should be suspended for being a blatant liar.

That's... so -blam!-ing stupid. Out of all the things to suspend kids over, they do it over this?
-
America: where kids are responsible for maintaining the reputation of an institution they are required by law to attend.
-
This is a perfect reason to suspend students. Why? They broke the rules.
-
Shitty reasoning, but hey, sparing society from the morons that actually think these videos are funny is alright with me.
-
Don't they have anything better to be doing in schools over there??
-
So they made a funny video and got a free vacation? Seems legit.
-
Foot Loose'd.
-
Some kids at my school did this during lunch while the Vice-Principal was in the cafeteria. He just called them crazy and walked away.

Butthurt school is butthurt over nothing.
-
This shit hasn't died off yet
-
>Baptist school Obviously they were mad about the buttsex

There's a local high school who did one too and it got them all suspended from the first round of tournament play. Yep. This is the line folks.
