Seems like the government is trying to push equality by taking out a law that basically discriminates against gays and lesbians. If DOMA is indeed struck down, that'll be one step closer to social equality.
Edit: DOMA stands for: Defense of Marriage Act, which basically says, "Only a man and a woman can get married."

Edited by Buona Sera: 2/24/2013 3:40:55 PMA more accurate description of the Defense of Marriage Act is "if another state in the US recognizes your same sex marriage as legal, other states don't have to". That is in direct violation of the constitution. It was shoved through by conservatives in the 90s when Hawaii was going to vote on legalizing gay marriage. They didn't want gay people from their state flying to Hawaii, getting married, and coming back to reap the benefits.
