Guns should absolutely modify how much damage you deal, they're guns, that's what they do >_> As for the aesthetic armor making a difference for your stats, I'm on the fence. On one hand, it would be cool to see a player with a particular armor set and be able to identify that "Oh hey, that player is building Energy at the cost of Agillity!", but on the other, I can imagine that many players would want aesthetics and stats to not be linked.
