Bungie University

I'm sure there's a thread on this already, but I just read this really good interview. I've never really seen that website before but they asked REALLY good questions. In fact, they answered almost every Mail Sack question I've asked that went unanswered in the last year. Really good. Best article on Bungie I've seen in ages based on that. But one thing that caught my eye was the mention of 'Bungie University.' It is host to 60+ hours of footage documenting events happening from the announcement of Destiny (to the Employees, not the public) as Bungie's next project, to now. Well, it wasn't too specific. I'm assuming the 60 hours aren't like... each employee picked a youtube video to put in the footage somewhere. ... I'll be blunt. I want to see these videos. I really, REALLY want that. That would be the absolute coolest thing like... ever. During the darkness, a lot of us are here for the Community and Bungie itself. I know I certainly care about the company and want it to do well, and that's pretty cool. As such, I absolutely ADORE finding out behind the scenes things. And while I'm positive there are a ton of things we aren't allowed to see yet... someday... when we know all about Destiny. I would love it if those floodgates were to be opened. Anybody else that would love to see that stuff? Fans of behind the scenes dealios? Who would love behind the scenes stuff in a Legendary Edition again (and NOT as a download, but something actually tangible!)?

That was an excellent interview. Bungie's preparation for newbies really impressed me. The Free-Lunch program sounds simple, but also effective. I haven't before heard of a company consciously investing in employee friendship. Bungie University too must provide a good way of gettng good basic familiarity with work colleagues.

  • I can't imagine why they wouldn't release some of it after Destiny launches, maybe by paring it down and editing it into a behind-the-scenes ViDoc or extra for a "limited edition" of some kind. Here's hoping!

  • Yes. And if it's included, that'll sell me on the Legendary Edition by itself.

  • Words cannot describe how much I want to see that. I LOVE behind the scenes stuff, especially from Bungie, and especially if it's super long. Maybe it will be released as an legendary edition bonus with the last Destiny game. A man can dream....

    • I was here during the dark, well as much as i could (No internet for the past year for me) and I really started to like Bungie for Bungie during that time. Not for Halo. I would love to see the videos with all my heart! Tangible is good for me. Still havent watched the Reach one... gotta find it on youtube.

Gosh, probably. Seems interesting. I don't think it's going to get released in the next four years though, it appears to be for training new employees. I also spoiler-ed some notable snippets:

GamesBeat: Did somebody in particular sell you on the idea of Destiny? I think you came in after it started, right? Parsons: No, we’ve all been working from the very beginning. Well, it depends on how you look at it. Destiny has been an idea bouncing around since even before the technology to make it existed.

We even have something called Bungie University where there’s more than 60 hours worth of video. Starting from when we kicked off Destiny to the team at large in August 2009, you can watch all the way until now.

GamesBeat: The one thing that seemed to cause some confusion out there was whether this could be called an MMO or if this is more like a single-player campaign-ish thing. Is there a new name for whatever this will be? “Universe” is a little vague. Parsons: It’s Bungie’s next first-person shooter. That’s how I think of it.

• I would want to watch this. I would like to see Bungie's side of things during the darkness and I also would love to since I want to develop games myself.

    • Disappointed at the beginning of the post Bungie wasn't founding an Accredited School, but won me back with the rest. I agree, that would be cool.

    • It seems like the sort of thing that would need to be edited down if any part of it would be shared to the public. It seems like it's meant to catch new hires up to where the project has gone and so on and so forth, and it probably contains a ton of technical information that your average joe can't process and a bunch of information that we simply don't need to know. "Why did Bungie cancel the Insect People? They looked so cool!"

    • Just read the article yesterday, a great read indeed. I'm only curious if that will be footage in special copies of Destiny, similar to Halo 2/3/Reach etc. Actually just last year they publicly released the Halo 2/3 video footage that was on the bonus disc content, I'm not sure if that has a public embargo on it for 5 years or so, but it's nice to filter through those and relive old memories. I'll agree that that there is nothing more awesome than seeing old, uncut, video footage of them theorizing on their new universe. Hopefully we can get some light shed on this topic. And 60 hours? Damn.

I would love to see them, but I'm sure they have a lot to do with trade secrets. If the information is everywhere, it becomes less valuable. Wanting access to Bungie's extremely hard-earned knowledge and experience for simply purchasing a game seems a little...I dunno how to put it, other than "wrong" or "selfish." Personally, as someone who has never designed a game, I'm sure the information would be fascinating, I love Bungie as much as the next guy (well, maybe more) but I would not be able to truly comprehend and appreciate it, so it would be wasted on me. Edit: And certainly would be wasted on the majority of people who see it, which would be everyone after their precious hard-earned secret sauce was uploaded to youtube.
