Society's money addiction disgusts me.

Helping out the homeless? Giving people a place to stand? Doing good in this word? So long as it doesn't cost me a penny. This mentality pisses me off. Why do people hate welfare? Because they have to chip in an extra ten or so dollars a month. God forbid you show some compassion. And yet we always toot the trumpet of "poverty is bad", and "goodwill toward all men on Earth". God, that's phony. Anyone else agree?

  • Take this as you will, although I mean it in the least rude way possible: You're incredibly ignorant and very naive. People don't have a problem helping out those who genuinely need it. The problem comes when people take advantage of our very liberal welfare system to get free money. This concept isn't difficult, at all, to understand.

  • You know what I don't understand, I often find the people who moan about paying for such things willingly donate to support similar (Although more drastic) countries in other countries. It's almost as if the only reason they don't want to be kind is because they are being forced to be kind but then again, it might be that their problem with the support systems is that the system is open to abuse from those just to lazy to work.

  • agreed. also, people abusing the system is the exception, not the rule. and even if it were the majority of cases that doesn't mean you shouldn't help those who actually need it.

I think the thing that a lot of people have problems with welfare is that the purpose of it is that you should use every single cent of it to help you get a job, but it's when you get the under-achievers who don't want to contribute anything to society and who are content with being tit-sucking lazy asses that start to piss people off. The point of Welfare is to provide you the basic necessities so that you can find yourself a job and make your own money. This is the corrupt thing about welfare. You can make anywhere from $1000-2500 a month on it. Now if God forbid you should go out and get a job, you will end up earning around $1200 a month at $7.50 an hour, 40 hour work weeks. So you tell me, would you rather make money doing nothing, or work and make the same or even less than doing nothing? Exactly. There is no incentive for people on welfare to work, and this is why it is so corrupt. This is exactly what communism is, and I'm not trying to scare people. That's what welfare is: communism. Anyone who tries to argue against that is mistaken. Now do I believe that welfare is a good thing? Yes, however I only believe it's good when it provides an incentive to work. When it provides no incentive to work, like ours does, it is very bad.

  • It's good to give money to the poor through welfare programs. But welfare programs should only go so far. People shouldn't be aloud to just live off of the peoples' money, they should be working hard to provide for themselves. I don't think giving to the needy is wrong, but we should only go so far.

  • I dislike it because I work DAMN hard for my money. And it sucks that I have to give up 30%+ of my paycheck to bad government programs. I dont mind giving to schools, fire departments, and police officers but giving to inner city scum that refuse to work and live off of me, I find disgusting. As for "helping out" the homeless. I dont. because in the past, whenever Ive given a homeless man 5 bucks or something. He goes to the nearest liquor store and buys some alcohol. So I dont waste my money anymore.

I dislike welfare because in contributes to the oppression of the lower classes, and is overall a waste of our valuable time and resources. Since the massive welfare reforms of the 1960s, first enacted by Johnson, the poverty rate in the United States has remained at a steady 14%, doing absolutely nothing to help aleviate the suffering of the lower classes. Yet, people still believe that the program is something that should be saved. Disgusting. If anything, all that wasted money we put into welfare should go into work programs like the Civilian Conservation Corps, which would rebuild Amercica's crumbling infrastructure, and give people trade skills. That's why I dislike our entitlement based society, it's a waste that does more harm than good. Honestly, in my opinion, welfare is one of the worst programs funded by our government.

        • Because alot of homeless people choose to be that way. They are fully capable of getting jobs and making a living. But they pick to mooch off the system and sit around drinking and doing drugs with the spare money they do get.

        • People hate welfare because the system is so corrupt and broken, not because they hate giving poor people money. I think a small amount of welfare is good, but the bigger and bigger the system gets, the more of a socialist and communistic country we become.

        • Most poor/homeless people around here really are lazy bums. It wouldn't be difficult for them to make a living in this area, and yet they prefer to just sit around, do drugs and get drunk, and hold up signs begging for money. If they are not willing to try, then they don't deserve my money, so why should I give it to them?

        • If you worked hard for your money and followed the law, you would have the same opinion. But it's likely that you are on welfare and do drugs so you are offended by the fact that people want to keep the money they earned. If anyone, you're the one with the money addiction.

          • Welfare is fine for people who actually need it, and who make every effort possible to get themselves out of needing it. The sad truth is, however, that many people here, myself included, know of people and probably entire families who abuse and exploit the system without trying to better themselves. What makes it worse are those families who raise their children into thinking that it's ok to be on welfare. I don't recall if it was you or someone else, but in a similar thread, someone said they should be allowed to use welfare money for their leisure. That's not what welfare money is for. It's supposed to be for the things you need, like food, water, shelter, and clothes. Not cigarettes, alcohol, drugs.

YOUR problems are exactly that. They're YOURS in the same way that MY money is MINE. Having MY tax money sent to crackhead suzy's 13 children isn't compassion, it's extortion. I shouldn't have to suffer because you suck at life.

            • compassion? I'm nice enough, but some people need to show that they will go far with my money. I only give if I know it will be spent well. It's a dog eat dog world out there and if you get caught up in compassion, you begin to find that things start to fall short, as I found when I was a college student.

            • I don't hate welfare, I hate the fact that people are allowed to abuse it. Why? Because, according to YOU, they have the right to leisure. Which apparently means people can get paid to sit on their ass and do drugs all day.
