DC artist quits Superman project over Orson Scott Card
Fans and retailers aren't the only people upset that DC has hired very vocal gay rights denier Orson Scott Card to write the digital-first Adventures of Superman comic; artist Chris Sprouse, who was due to illustrate Card's take specifically, has just quit the book due to the controversy. Sprouse gave a statement earlier today:
"It took a lot of thought to come to this conclusion, but I've decided to step back as the artist on this story. The media surrounding this story reached the point where it took away from the actual work, and that's something I wasn't comfortable with. My relationship with DC Comics remains as strong as ever and I look forward to my next project with them."
Due to Sprouse's departure, the first issue (out May #29) will now feature a story by Jeff Lemire and artist Chris Samnee instead of Card's, as DC search for a new artist who is comfortable with this extremely uncomfortable situation.
Sauce. So what do you think of this continuing brouhaha involving Orson Scott Card and DC comics? Do you care that buying his works funds his ability to actively oppose gay rights? Are you going to boycott the Ender's Game movie?

 • I think people really overstate Card's "homophobia". It is true, he does not want gays to marry, but he has laid his reasoning out here. While I may disagree with most of it, I do think he has at least a tempered approach to the subject. He points out that homosexuality is not any more of a sin than pre-marital, heterosexual sex, and even explains his empathy toward uncontrollable sexual desires. He even points out that homosexuals are no less talented, and do not have diminished character. It seems to me he has put a lot more thought and reason behind his arguments than most religious opposition to gay marriage. His position is squared entirely around his church's teachings. The guy is devoutly religious, and came to one of the most moderate positions you can come to if you really believe homosexuality can damn an immortal soul to hell. I don't think he has any ill will towards homosexuals, in fact, I think he tries pretty hard to sympathize with them. He is just obeying the rules of his church. So, I think if people have a problem with his statements, it shouldn't so much be a problem with him, but with the church.
