So as many of you may know, SimCity released this week. A lot of websites have said the game itself is pretty good, and it looks like it from the videos and demos I've seen. Unfortunately, its always-online requirement has made it a little bit, sort of, completely broken. For obvious reasons, people are in an uproar at SimCity, Maxis, EA, and always-online connections in general.
As we're all aware, Destiny also has a required internet connection. In my opinion, this requirement is justified for Destiny. Unlike SimCity, which can easily function as a single-player game without losing out on any gameplay features, Destiny (at least from what we've been told) must have on internet connection in order to access the multiplayer and co-op features that are the core of the game. Knowing this, I don't have a problem with the required internet connection. However, I am worried about the taste left in the mouth of the gaming community after the effects of SimCity and last year's Diablo 3. I fear that the mere mention of "always-online" for Destiny will now illicit a knee-jerk negative reaction, despite the necessity.
I think the safest thing to do would probably be to include a single-player offline option, but it's probably way too late in development for that, not to mention that it goes against Destiny's core concepts and I think it would show more innovative spirit to take the risk of being online-only. And above all, please hold a public beta to test server stress.
What do you think, community? Have recent "always-online" issues given you reason to be concerned with Destiny? Would you prefer that Destiny include an offline option? Or do you think Destiny should stick to being always-online?
Discuss.

I don't mind the fact that Destiny is always online. Matchmaking for Strikes is great since I don't have many "friends" on Xbox one. But I wish there was an option to turn off the random players showing up in my, so-called, single player campaign. I like doing campaigns by myself, and not have my mission route already cleared of enemies.

Edited by Arbiter 739: 11/7/2013 12:51:57 AMEDIT: That was Edited: Mar 8 at 2:31:25 AM Mindshard. PLEASE REMEMBER TO CHECK THE DATE ABOUT STUFF THAT CHANGES BECAUSE STUFF CHANGES. HOW DID YOU PEOPLE EVEN FIND THIS OLD THREAD ANYWAYS IT'S OCT 28 VERSUS MAR 11? /shiftlock No. That is way off the mark. Look: Bungie has already said that you can have a fufilling game experience without any internet connection. That is a fact that directly contradicts the idea of Destiny having Always Online DRM. I also feel as though I should say that in order to play multiplayer you need a connection regardless and that it doesn't count.

As someone who played Diablo 3 on PC and PS3 I can tell you the difference between online only and not. On PS3 it's nearly impossible to find legit players. Everyone has modified items and characters making the game entirely pointless. While some people complain about the online only requirement it's by far worth it compared to the alternative.
-
With the game being on consoles, and Bungie saying that you can play the game on your own, I doubt it will have something like that. Only EA is continuing with its insane DRM ideas, other companies are already getting out of that idea. Also, I have heard from longterm fans that SimCity is missing a lot of features from past SimCity games, including ones that should have been obvious for the developers to keep.
-
This burden is to one of two features one it will boost the number of online accounts which I see as an act of greed or the worlds are just that huge regardless I want it to be optional whether I play online or offline. Bungie you are absolutely skilled and that's why I beg you don't make the mistake of making one of the literal best games I've ever seen worthless please don't do this. I know I'm just some gamer, but I've been playing since the first halo and you've come so far don't ruin this. Making this game only online may disappoint several gamers like myself and make the game not worth buying at all. An online only feature could result in lost costumers, lost saved data, and no insult to any one new, but if people can't get the ropes before they play then noobs like little six year olds ruining the game for others or just plain noobs. This is actually (obviously) coming from someone with Internet and I'm looking in the best interest of gamers everywhere.

I think it's up to the designers to decide how their game should be played. If they want a persistent connection, that's fine, as long as they understand the negative ramifications with that decision. As consumers, it's our job to decide if that restriction is important to us. If you don't want an always online game, or dont have the internet capasity to handle one, don't buy the game. If enough people don't buy it, developers will think twice about that decision in the future. For me, it's not an issue, and I'll be buying the game.
-
I'm perfectly fine with it since I always play online. I also understand why they're doing it, the game will have changes and updates happening to it daily if it goes as they plan. People would miss out on these things if they were playing offline.
-
I think it'll be like Dark Souls. You can play offline, but you're missing a big part of the game. The invasions is what makes the game so -blam!-ing rage worthy and spontaneous.
-
inb4 fanboys disagree. Too late.
-
It's not recent issues that bring up the concern for me. It's my origins as an offline player that make me highly critical of the online requirement. While I'm disappointed that Destiny won't be offline capable, I can understand why. I just hope they add some sort of single-player or offline mechanic.
-
There is no comparison to the release and infrastructure support of SimCity and Destiny. Different companies... different financial backing... different expectations. There will be 100x more players in the first week of destiny, then there will be in the entire existence of the recently released SimCity game.
-
I'd say have online and offline offline 4 player split screen online 2-4 split screen ? there for every one can enjoy it for people who want there our screen and have a good connection can play online and for others who have a bad connection and 3 friends can still enjoy the game therefore Bungie gets more money and more people are happy

Edited by SilentJay585: 3/8/2013 4:26:56 PMThe Call Of Duty series has this in place for online and co-op modes so those that play that or play Halo should be familier with this and I agree it would be nice to have offline campaign but at the same time with online they can add to the story line with dlc's and extra content to extend the experience of the game and I also feel that should this game be completely online then so be it and it would be a better decision for story mode content and also easy play but as you said Spartan as Beta may actually be needed to make sure the servers can handle the stress of online multiplayer and online co-op and online campaign that or Bungie needs to just buy the best servers and or have dedicated servers to help with any possible lag issues. Overal even though I stated in and earlier post id prefer to wait to play the full game versus a beta I would support the beta for that it would help make sure the game flows properly on servers, I just would not play it as to not take away from my personal excitement to play the full game once it hits stores.
-
I don't mind social stuff, even if it's a bit forced, what I do mind is lag. My internet provider has an F+ rating on a national level, and being in a rural area means my options are... limited. I can play multiplayer fine, but the lag in firefight and other such variants makes me cringe since that's what will happen with destiny, unless something incredible is done to make the servers faster.
-
Edited by Seggi: 3/8/2013 2:56:06 PMI'll probably buy Simcity along with a crack, soon. I don't tend to support piracy, but I -blam!-ing hate DRM like that. I'm not that concerned about Destiny, though.
-
But Activision ... who love Microsoft with all their heart ... are only doing this to drive up the membership of XBL. Activision desire to only make money for Microsoft. (And DMR is already built into the xbox and playstation platforms)
-
Edited by ArmorSolider: 3/8/2013 2:35:41 PM(a Single Player offline option should always be available) since it will allow an unrushed experience so players can explore and enjoy the world. but online does add the bonus of additional gameplay being added and updated..its a two-sided coin.
-
What if the reason for always online isn't just for the core experience but maybe because the game itself is so huge bungie has built it on a massive server (or multiple servers) at an undisclosed location. Then when we get our disc it only contains an access code to enter this world of Destiny plus all the coding for weapons, armour, customization, vehicles, etc.. It would allow it to be so much bigger than a world of Skyrim and such. Thats maybe why in the ViDoc they say when its turned lose on us they don't neccasarily know what might and can happen. Just a thought.
-
Ok well Destiny is mainly a co-op game, but it has been stated that you will be able to play a single player game. People don't always want to be online all the time and sometimes they can't anyway. Internet connections going off, people pulling plugs out and so on.
I fear that the mere mention of "always-online" for Destiny will now illicit a knee-jerk negative reaction, despite the necessity.
And it should, the same can also be said about the next Xbox. If it is, it will be one of the things that'll put me off it.
-
While I am not a fan of DRM, I believe Destiny is to be a multi-player heavy game. Therefore it would make sense for a connection to be required. Unlike SimCity which I consider a primarily single player experience that I should be able to play on my laptop wherever I go.
-
Have you ever not been able to play Halo because 'servers' were too busy?
-
Not really concerned, as bungie has said this game is built with cooperative play in mind not really something they want you to play alone. Although you can but you'd still randomly run into people on your adventures. IMO sharing the fantasy with others is really awesome and the way to go to show that in this universe, you aren't the most imporrtant person, but you have the ability to create your legend.
-
I don't mind the always online, but sometimes my connection fluctuates and if i literally get kicked out of my own game because of it I won't be too happy.
-
Well I understand the always online but in my case my internet will go out from time to time and I don't wanna have to restart an entire dungeon or mission just because something happen I can't control so the wise thing to do would make it so if your offline you simply don't encounter other player but online then you can meet random people. Sort of how dragon's dogma worked in the pawn's walking around offline there were randomly generated pawn's by the computer and online there was pawn's made by other players; but in Destiny if offline then it's just you on the npc's which could be lonely or could be okay and online you'd have world's filled with players running around like a normal MMO
-
I think that the always-online thing is fairly understandable - given that most of the newest versions of consoles have wifi capabilities and such and that cooperative gameplay is likely going to be Destiny's main pulling factor.
-
EA just chucks everything at the wall to see what sticks. They are a business first and a game developer second. Bungie is the opposite and so I have faith in them.
