Both are massive, popular fantasy epics, and in my opinion the two best fantasy works there are. Out of these two, which do you guys prefer?
It's a tough call, but as much as I love Harry Potter, LotR gets a slight edge for me. It just was so....epic. The concept of the journey, the encounters, etc, just gets me so pumped. The LotR trilogy remains as some of my favorite movies of all time.
I will say though, I do find the Harry Potter books easier to reread than the Lord of the Rings books.

For the movies, I think LotR is better because they are all exceptional movies. The Harry Potter movies are much more varied in quality. I thought Prisoner of Azkaban was excellent, both parts of Deathly Hallows were very good, and then the rest of the movies varied from pretty good to "meh", Half-Blood Prince being at the top and Goblet of Fire being "meh". For books, though, I'm always going to have a soft spot for Harry Potter. Granted, I've never read the LotR books, but I don't think they would change anything. Harry Potter was the first major series I started reading when I was probably 5 or 6. And I've probably read the entire series at least ten times through, and books 3, 5, 6, and 7 even more than that.
