Spawn trapping- Legit tactic or cheating?

Was playing a game of BF3 on Grand Bazaar, Rush. They destroyed one of the things so we had to defend the other one, and it was at stage 1. We managed to pin them down right at their spawn which was directly down the street from the station, and as soon as they left they were assaulted by a hail of gunfire, grenades and mortar fire of all classes. Do you see spawn trapping as a cheap tactic, or a good display of teamwork and using the environment to your advantage?

Ideally, spawn trapping is something that can only be accomplished by a relatively well-coordinated team, or a team that simply outnumbers the force that is getting spawn-trapped. If spawn trapping is too easy, I think it's more a product of poor map design than the skill or lack thereof of the players involved. My favorite online game right now is PlanetSide 2, and spawn trapping is a fact of life in that game. The objective of the attackers is not just to capture points in bases and infiltrate bases properly, but to essentially spawn-trap the defending team inside their spawn building, which requires a lot of work on the part of the attackers, and requires the attackers to constantly suppress the defenders in order to win. It takes a certain level of coordination and skill for the attackers to pull off, although overwhelming numbers almost always helps. In PlanetSide 2, I don't consider this to be poor map design, just a part of the game.

  • It's legit cheating. Like bribes in Mexico.

  • Just bad taste to me. I'm all for domination, but not at the cost of fun.

It depends on if the trapped team can attempt to retaliate. If they all die before getting to do anything then yes to cheating. If they can actually fight back then no.

  • Legit, but often testament to uneven teams

  • Spawn trapping is fair game. If one team is bad enough that they have lost all of their ground, than they deserve to be screwed. Besides, it's not like it's impossible to break out of one.

  • Not cheating but it's definitely a kill joy for the other team imo

  • Spawn trapping happened all the time in Operation Metro on BF3 where the Americans would trap the Russians. It wasn't hard to get out of it, you had to either use rocket launchers like sniper rifles or try to find a hole in the "wall" and run to C and take it. Me and my friends used to turn the tide all the time.

  • Its technically not cheating, but I do consider it a dirty tactic. It makes it so that one team isn't allowed to play the game anymore and makes the game too easy for the team that initiated the spawn trap. I've been on both sides of it and neither is fun in any way, shape, or form. The only people who I've seen at least that seem to enjoy it are those that care too much about their stats.

  • I've never considered it cheating. However I consider it a symptom of bad matchmaking. Because that implies that one team is far more skilled than the other team. It's impossible for a match between two equal skill level teams to spawn-trap each other.

    • I don't see why it would be considered cheating. It's fair game in my book.

    • Rush = spawn trapping. That's why I avoid this shitty game type.

It's a legit tactic that requires teamwork (although it can be done by yourself in some games). Much like football, the better team will keep pushing back the other team until they are at the goal line (spawn). As a BO2 player who performs solo spawn traps, it's fairly difficult to keep it going once you have them trapped. EDIT: I didn't realize someone necro'd this...

    • If you push the other team back to the spawn then you can push no further and must spawn trap, giving them "A fair chance" is a terrible set of logic that costs you wins.

Definitely not cheating. It's an MLG tactic used with a group of people you've trained with. However, if you're not MLG skilled and you're getting spawn trapped that's the fault of the matchmaking system. You simply should not be paired up with these people. The system truly isn't fair in that instance. So ideally, if the matchmaking system worked and there was a solid and diverse population, you should not be spawn trapped unless indeed you possess the skill to make it happen.

It's completely legit to use what's in game to win, no matter what it is. Being able to do this, however, is a symptom of bad map design. It's kind of like, I dunno, using the Boltshot. Good players use Boltshots, because it's what gets the kills...but that doesn't mean the weapon isn't broken. It also isn't skillful to spawn trap and then proceed to spawn camp. I want to say spawn trapping is skillfull whilst spawn camping is not, but since spawn trapping is the absolute control of the other team is order to begin spawn camping, they go hand in hand. Positioning your reticle over where an enemy will spawn and proceeding to hit them with a one hit kill weapon like a sniper rifle takes absolutely no skill, out of context of other things, anyway.

There's no such thing as cheating on a game unless actual cheats, mods or hacks are involved. Its like the scrubs on fighting games that whine about ring outs. They say its unfair and it makes you a cheap cheater. Don't criticize others skill just because you don't have the skill to stop it. By the by, I wasn't talking about you specifically, whenever I said "you". But all that is just my opinion, I don't consider anything to be cheap or unfair (other than actual cheating of course) if I can't stop my opponent/enemies from doing something to have an advantage over me, then it is my fault and mine alone.

    • it is a cheap tactic, but a legitimate one. personally, I find it sad that the game is broken enough that you can trap people in spawn. I can understand it if the whole enemy team is running around as snipers though.

    • If they have no chance of defending themselves, like if you can kill them right as they respawn so they can't fight back, then no, don't do it.

    • Legitimate. Devs can't really do much to prevent players from doing it.
