Explaining Prom to non-Americans

First off, what is Prom, how does it work? Is it just a school dance, or something more? Second, what does it represent? What is the social structure of Prom? Why is it such a big deal? Third, is it really only in America? We don't have Prom where I live, but in England? Scandinavia?

  • It's a dance, usually near the end of the school year. Different schools have different requirements for it. At my school its for juniors and seniors only. I think that's fairly common. Also, they usually have a different theme every year, picked by one of the classes. It doesn't really represent anything, as far as i know. It's usually more formal than other dances, and because of that some kids take it more seriously. Not sure about if it's in other countries or not.
