Why do people still believe in religion in 2013?

This is more directed towards Christianity but I hope you get the meaning. You won't believe in evolution but you would believe that some dude in the sky created everything on Earth because obviously it makes so much sense and has so much more evidence. Some guy 2000 years ago claimed to be your savior and claims that he will be back, yet in 2000 years of human history we have not seen even a trace of him (of course, not before countless killings have been committed in his name), yet you still continue to believe. You would believe in a number of fairy tales including a man on a giant ship with a bunch of animals floating on the sea during a giant flood, but an asteroid hitting the Earth and killing the dinosaurs is just impossible. And worst of all, their main excuse is, "Why can't you just let other people be and let them believe what they want?" Yet they are the ones going around spouting their nonsense in people's faces, they are the ones who oppose homosexuals getting married, they are the ones who want to force their unreasonable beliefs into the public education system (intelligent design, prayers at school, etc.). What hypocrites.

  • Note: I know this is an obvious troll, but I'm making this post for others who don't understand. Sure, God doesn't seem realistic. However, that does not stop people from wanting him to exist. Think of it this way. Maybe you are poor. Maybe someone close to you is incredibly sick, and it is quite possible they will die. Maybe nothing goes the way you want it, and it seems like life is making you it's bitch. You might work as hard as you can to make your life better, but nothing works. In a life without God, you have no solutions. You have no hope. You know that things aren't going to get better. In a life without God, you still have no solutions. However, you still have hope. You believe that God will help you, or at the very least, you pray that he will help you. It allows people to live, knowing that there is a divine being out there. A being that protects them, as long as they adhere to it's laws. The know that they are not alone in their struggle. This is why many believe in God, or at the very least, why I started to. I don't care if God seems unrealistic. I just don't want to be alone.

It's nice reading all those prophecies written about Him coming true. 2. He never said when He would come back, therefore we still have to wait. 3. I don't think he would exactly condone the killing of other people, even if in His name, because He preached to love people, even if you hate their opinions.
You would believe in a number of fairy tales including a man on a giant ship with a bunch of animals floating on the sea during a giant flood, but an asteroid hitting the Earth and killing the dinosaurs is just impossible.
1. I don't see how it has been proved wrong. 2. Our Book doesn't tell us how old the Earth is, or how much time passed between each of those first seven "days", so there is the chance the dinosaurs were destroyed before man was created.
"Why can't you just let other people be and let them believe what they want?"
Don't generalize us, please. We can love and respect you and everyone else, even if we don't agree with your/their opinions and beliefs.

Not this thread again...the last thing we need is another religious war. Can't we all admit that there are ignorant people in both Religious and Atheist groups? I think this guy is a prime example of this, although I'm trying not to take him too seriously just based off of his name.

        • I find it funny how you don't even have a good aruguement yourself. 1. A lot of, if not most, Christians believe in evolution. 2. Using wars against the whole of Christianity is stupid, becuase then you would have to apply the same arguement against money, women, oil, land, and anything else that has caused wars. I would say more, but I have to go.

I know of the existence of evolution and dinosaurs, like the vast majority of Christians.
Some guy 2000 years ago claimed to be your savior and claims that he will be back, yet in 2000 years of human history we have not seen even a trace of him
I see Him every day. I understand you're trolling, but this is discussion-worthy.

Do you have evidence that there is no God? And yes, you can prove a negative.
Some guy 2000 years ago claimed to be your savior and claims that he will be back, yet in 2000 years of human history we have not seen even a trace of him (of course, not before countless killings have been committed in his name), yet you still continue to believe.
When did he say that he'd be back in 2000 years? Never.
You would believe in a number of fairy tales including a man on a giant ship with a bunch of animals floating on the sea during a giant flood, but an asteroid hitting the Earth and killing the dinosaurs is just impossible.
What Christian said that an asteroid never hit the Earth? They're obviously wrong. There are multiple craters that could have all had the potential to wipe out the dinosaurs.
Yet they are the ones going around spouting their nonsense in people's faces,
A lot of the time, Atheists are the ones doing the exact same thing that they accuse Christians of.
they are the ones who oppose homosexuals getting married, they are the ones who want to force their unreasonable beliefs into the public education system (intelligent design, prayers at school, etc.).
We oppose homosexuals getting married because our God commands it. It would be pure hypocrisy to not oppose it. However, I'm not going to vote against homosexual marriage because nowhere does the constitution state that they can't be married, and our entire country was founded on the idea of "Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness." If people think that being married to another person of the same gender will bring them happiness, then the constitution protects that. I still don't think that gay marriage is right, but I can't force my beliefs on others. People will do what they will do. I don't want intelligent design to be taught in schools the way that most people view it. I believe in intelligent design but not the way that the Bible says it was if taken literally. There are multiple reasons for me to believe that the Bible wasn't being exactly literal when it was talking about the world being made in 7 days. I believe it happened through evolution. Even if I'm wrong, I hardly believe that God will send me to hell for believing something different than what a lot of Christians do. Prayers in school... this has got to be one of the most stupid things I have ever encountered. I saw a kid a few weeks ago in my study hall reading the Bible, and everyone was looking at him and saying "dude, what are you doing?" They looked at him like he had the plague, however just a few days ago there was a Muslim reading the Quran with the exact same people in the exact same study hall, and nobody did anything. They didn't even pass a glance at him. So with that being said, why is it that atheists are so against people following their religion in school by reading a Bible or praying? It seems to me that it has a lot less to do with religion, and a lot more to do with prejudice against Christianity. How is someone praying in school affecting you in any way?

Don't care if you have trolling incentives, you're right on everything that you say. Refer to my other thread My reason on why religion is still around is because it's a tradition and everyone else believes in it. Also gives people something to coward towards and false hope. Like how people can't comprehend being nothing when they die or when some old soccer mom wins the lotto and says she prayed every night.

                  • This might be the most ignorant post ever posted on the flood. I dont know why you people, and yes I did just say you people, get this idea that christians dont believe in evolution. We do. Evolution does not disprove God. It never has. Why are we against homosexuals getting married? Last time I checked, the church is a private organization, which believes that marriage, one of its sacraments, should be between a man and a woman. The real problem is with the government which is suppose to be separate from the church to begin with, so don't point the finger at us. Lastly your comments about Jesus, if you knew anything, you would know it says Jesus' second coming will be at the end of the world, he hasn't returned because the world hasn't ended yet, artard. The ignorance of you people. Go read a book.
