Ever heard of the Immortal Jellyfish?
This little fellow grows, reaches sexual maturity then reverts into polyp stage and starts over. While theoretically it can live forever, most seem to end up dying from predation or disease.

I'm wondering any more animals don't have this characteristic - possibly many species did, but the species that lived shorter and thus bred faster and consumed less resources probably triumphed through natural selection over millions of years.
