About half and hour ago, I experienced the satisfaction of conquering 1999 mode in BioShock Infinite (without the use of Dollar Bill vending machines). I died 5 times along the way and there were some very close calls too. The handymen, snipers, RPG and volley gun "guys" being among the more troublesome enemies. It was intense to say the least.
Anyone else finished, attempting or planning to attempt 1999 mode?

I just started it. I'm dreading the Lady Comstock battle already. Can you recommend what gear combinations you should use?

I already finished it about four days after finishing the game. Lady Comstock fight in the graveyard was UN -blam!-ING FAIR. Almost all my deaths in 1999 were there. There is so little ammo available.

I've just started Emporia on my (first) 1999 playthrough. I was going to try without Dollar Bill, deciding after I used one. Fuuuu- Still, it'll give me practice for the next Achievement. Also, a lot of the tips I've heard about the mode aren't that relevant. The only thing I really do more is change Gear and mix up my Vigours a bit more. I still play quite similarly.

Im just before the final battle. Also 1999 mode and no Dollar bill machines. Its not as hard as Levine made it out to be. You still respawn if you die. Now if they made it no respawns it would be batshit insane. I died once to the second handyman you fight. Twice to the Siren you fight. Once to them damned snipers. Twice to the Patriot fights. Im expecting to die twice at least in the final battle. Oh and i maxed out Posession, Devils kiss and Shock jockey. Also maxed out hand cannon, carbine, machine gun, shotgun and rpg.

Played the game trough once in normal. Great story boring gun play. Not planning to play again.

I'm not going for the dollar bill thing, but I've started it.

Yeah I finished it... I think yesterday morning. Or the night before. I died much more than 5 times, but yeah.
