Why don't they give civil partnerships the same legal rights as marriage?
The gays/lesbians get the legal benefits they want and the Christians don't have marriage tainted with homosexuality, everybody's happy! :D

I don't get why people keep associating this with Christians having to marry gays, they will never be forced to do so, nor will they be forced not to. Churches that don't want it, fine, churches that will allow it, fine.

Better question: Why is government involved in marriage at all? Utterly stupid. The government creates inequality through social engineering of the tax code and then creates rights in order to divide us up into groups.

14 RepliesSeparate but equal is not equal. Its that simple. In the USA we had a Civil Rights movement that taught us a great many things. We learned how evil and how good we could be. The Gay Marriage issue falls in with civil rights. Are two men, adult and consenting, less than people because they wish to marry each other? Should they get special status simply for being who they are? If we keep a group separate, then they are not equal, they are made different. As long as they are different, they will be discriminated against. We have decided that discrimination is a bad thing, no to be condoned in any way. So, we either decide to be a discriminatory society, where we can make any group into the outsider, or we can be inclusive and allow everybody the same rights.

Many states have banned gay marriage. Courts have deemed that for homosexuals, any act that is 'substantially similar' is unconstitutional due to this ban. The debate between what constitutes 'substantially similar' can range from how you enter a partnership to the rights you have within it. The trick is getting it as close as possible without getting domestic partnerships declared unconstitutional.

Here how about this. We remove the notion of government supported marriage all together and have just civil unions. You want to be recognized as a couple in the government's eyes, you file for a civil union. If you want a wedding, go ahead. If you want to call it marriage, go ahead.

5 RepliesHey Op have you ever heard of the Jim Crow laws? Which was stuff like separate water fountains for blacks and whites. Waiting rooms blacks only. Basically it was separating the blacks from the whites and it treated them as 2nd class citizens. The blacks got pretty much the same things as the whites and everybody was happy....Oh wait the blacks hated it so you had all that equality shit.
