Why are there political sides?

Why are there political sides, why not just vote for what is right as opposed what you are biased to? Also I have what's most likely an unrealistic idea can we all act like adults and not flame each other?

The problem isn't that we have political parties. It only becomes a problem when we start acting like they're football teams and start cheering on one and hating their rivals rather than working together to solve problems.

    • Because people have different opinions. And most people lean either right or left. Of course I dont vote for ALL Republicans, but the majority of my votes go to republicans.

    • Because until we can prove ideas absolutely right or absolutely wrong, political parties are just a way for people to group up and try to convince the other sides that they are right. At least, they should be like that, instead of just fighting because most people would rather stick to their party than root for the other people, even if that person thinks the others are right.

    •
why not just vote for what is right as opposed what you are biased to?
because what you think is right will correlate with what you're biased towards.

    • It's easier to pick sides than have a focused study on each individual issue. And it's even easier to insult the other "side" then accept other folks with other points of view may have good points, or hell, are even good, smart people.

    • The problem is that what's "right" is not an absolute fact. Just look at things like gay marriage, prayer in schools, teaching of evolution/creationism, gun control and abortion. Who's right? The more progressive people will usually say gun control is the right thing to do, whereas conservatives will disagree. Christians and catholics will usually say gay marriage and abortion is wrong and that prayer and creationism should be part of our schools, whereas atheists will say the complete opposite is what's right. And it goes even further than that. What about woman's rights? Racial seggregation? We've come to the point that there's a general consensus on those, but there's still people (extremists, KKK, neo-nazis, religious cults, foreign cultures...) who will have different opinions on them. There is no absolute right or wrong. Political parties are a way of reading a society's opinion on certain things, and then deciding what policy is the "right" one in the light of a society's stance on it.
