  • They ensure that you don't get paid a penny a day. Mandated weekends? Thank unions. Minimum wage? Thank unions. Child labor laws? Thank unions. Workplace safety regulations? Thank unions.

The main difficulty that many have with unions is that they become as powerful as the business which employs their members and can then negotiate contracts that can put the employer (who has to then balance the cost of having union employees and trying to stay competitive with other companies) out of business. It's the difference between a symbiosis and a parasite. Unions themselves are neither "good" nor "bad". They can be of immense benefit to workers, employees and the public at large. Until they hunger for something that their host cannot provide without dying itself. Another example of the power they wield (which some have a problem with) is that after Hurricane Sandy, utility workers from out of state who were coming to help reconnect power and restore services to the victims of the storm, they were stopped at the state lines and told that they could not assist because they were non-union. Recovery and restoration of vital services to the entire public was prevented by unions who had a stranglehold on "who can and can't do what". And unionized federal employees? Even FDR saw the inherent flaws in that idea.

  • To add onto what Recon said, you also must pay a Union due when you are in a union. Some jobs require you to be in a union. That money that is taken as your due tends to also be used for political donations. You could be funding a candidate that you don't like and would not vote for. Unions had a purpose, and may still have in some sense. But I believe that purpose is waning and a lot of them have become more trouble then they are worth. I have still yet to figure out why we have Unions for government jobs...

  • Why are they good? Because they ensure that employees are all paid, disciplined, scheduled and assigned duties the same - no favoritism or preferential treatment. And it takes a while to fire people. Why are they bad? See above. Then add to it that Management and Union Stewards and Leaders tend to antagonize each other, and that in a lot of ways (at least in places where unions like SEIU represent workers), individuals don't get recognized for going the "extra mile" in the job. I'll never work another Union job again if I have my way.

  • They do the wrong things for the right reasons.

  • The idea is that the union ensures employees get fair pay and benefits and all that jazz but in reality it is only there to keep overpaid underworked people from getting fired.
